EAST CARBON/TAYLORSVILLE- On June 24, 2013, our mother, Mary Isaura Martinez Palacios passed away peacefully at the home of her granddaughter Lisa surrounded by her many, many loved ones; we are joyful that she is rejoining the love of her life, Joe. Mary was born to Patricio Martinez and Martina Maes Martinez on Sept. 25, 1920, in New Mexico and reared in Canjilon. Mary came to Utah some time after her mother’s death and lived with her father who worked in the copper mines. There she met Joe Palacios, her soul mate, and they married in 1942 in Evanston, Wyo. Together they had six children and reared them in Carbon County, Utah. Mary is survived by all of her children: Josephine Turner (“Bud,” deceased), Christina Palacios, Victoria Palacios (Robert Johnson, deceased), Gregory Palacios (Daynna), Frances Palacios, and Marianne Palacios (Blaine). Mary is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, her sister Patricia Gonzales, her brother Agripino Martinez, Carla Jones who was like a daughter to her and her goddaughter Dee Martinez.
Our beloved mother was preceded in death by our dad Joe in 1992. Her devotion to him was constant. For more than 20 years she kept him in her heart and frequently spoke of how she looked forward to joining him. Mom, Dad, we are happy you are together again. Mary was also preceded in death by her parents; by her siblings Amalia Leyba, Joseph Martinez, Patricio Martinez, Jr., Monte Martinez, and Baltazar Martinez; by her sons-in-law Bud Turner and Robert Johnson; and by her grandchildren Chelsea Palacios and Derek Turner.
That Mary was loved by all is evidenced by the hundreds who attended her 90th birthday celebration. She was, by all measures, an amazing mother, self-sacrificing, generous, and resourceful as she had to be those many times the coal mines were idle. She had the highest moral standards and demanded her children adhere to the same standards. She was devoted to God and her church. Mary’s sense of humor was legendary among us. Quick, witty, wry and self-effacing, she could bring us to the floor laughing with just a word or a look. And she was strong. Over the years there were many family crises. Mom was our rock. Her strength and wisdom sustained the family. When we look at our children, we see Mary. When we look at our grandchildren, we see Mary.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Good Shepherd Hospice whose staff provided excellent care to Mary and who helped us understand what to expect and how to support Mary in her final days. Finally, words are not adequate to express the debt of gratitude we owe to Mary’s granddaughter, Lisa Carbine and her family. Their love, patience and sacrifice made the end of her life the best experience it could possibly have been.
A viewing was held on Thursday, June 27, from 6-7 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 E. Main St., Price Utah, followed by the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. A Requiem Mass celebrating Mary’s life was held on June 28 at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Parish in East Carbon, Utah. A viewing was held prior to the Mass from 10-11 a.m. Interment in Price City Cemetery beside her husband.
