The two Green River High basketball teams each won three region games last week as the regular season is rapidly coming to a conclusion. With the three victories, both the boys and the girls are battling for the region title and are currently in second place in region 19. The boys have a season region record of 7-1 right behind Monticello with a 7-0 record. Those two teams will play each other in the final game of the season.
The Lady Pirates have a 6-2 region record and are tied with Whitehorse. Monticello leads the region with a 6-1 record. Green River plays Monticello this Tuesday and Whitehorse this Friday and can determine their own fate with two victories.
Last week The Green River boys defeated Pinnacle 64-33, defeated Monument Valley 67-61 and then completed the road trip with an 88-43 victory over Navajo Mountain. The Lady Pirates defeated Pinnacle 47-41, Monument Valley 54-36 and Navajo Mountain 71-55.
Kira Engleman and Taylor Johnson are the statistical leaders for the Pirates this season and the two were the leading scorers in all three games this week. Engleman scored 12 against Pinnacle, 16 against Monument Valley and 16 against Navajo Mountain. Johnson scored 10 points in the first game, 19 points against Monument Valley and 16 points in the final game. In addition, Johnson had 10 rebounds against Pinnacle and 18 rebounds and 9 rebounds in the two games down south.
Also scoring against Pinnacle were Sydney Thayn with 9 points, Savannah Williams with 6 points, Robin Nelson and Presley Lovato with 3 points each and Cassidy Bastian and Cassidee Moore with 2 points each. At Monument Valley, Thayn led the rest of the scorers with 8 points, Lovato scored 6 points, Williams scored 3 points and Nelson scored 2 points. Against Navajo Mountain, Moore scored 11 points, Williams scored 8 points, Bastian and Thayn scored 6 points each and Nelson and Lovato each scored 4 points.
For the boy’s team, Jon Mendez and TJ Hughes have emerged as the leading scorers for the season. Mendez scored 7 points against Pinnacle, 22 points against Monument Valley and 12 points in the final game. Hughes was scoring 16, 18 and 11 points in the three games. In addition, Mendez had 19 rebounds against Monument Valley and 10 against Navajo Mountain.
Spencer Marshall scored 8, 12 and 16 points in the three games last week and in addition he had 9 rebounds against Monument Valley and 12 against Navajo Mountain.
Also scoring at Pinnacle were Chance Pfander with 10 points, Corbin Mecham with 8, Jovani Flores with 3, Nick Corrigan with 9, and Tyrell Shumway with 3 points. Scoring in the close game with Monument Valley were Shumway with 8 points, Pfander with 5 points and Corrigan with 2 points.
At Navajo Mountain, six different Pirate players finished the game with double digit scoring. Besides Mendez, Hughes and Marshall, Mecham scored 15 points, Corrigan scored 12 points and Flores scored 10 points. Shumway added 6 points and Karson Nelson and Logan Spadafora each scored 2 points.
The lone game this week for the boys is a game against Whitehorse this Friday at home.
