Despite losses last week to the top two programs in region 19, the Green River High Lady Pirates are off this week to Richfield to participate in the Utah State 1-A girls’ basketball tournament. After finishing third in the region the Lady Pirates will open the three-day affair with a game against Wendover High, the second place team out of region 18.
Wendover finished the season with an 8-2 region record and an overall record of 14-5. The Pirates and Wendover played a couple of the same teams throughout the season and they had similar results against Tabiona and Altamont. The Wednesday game should come down to the wire and should be a good game for both teams. Game time is Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Sevier Valley Center.
Last week Green River closed out the season with games against Monticello and Whitehorse. Monticello defeated the Pirates 43-37 after opening up a lead in the third quarter. Green River actually won the other three quarters 27-26 but lost the third 17-10.
Whitehorse also used a big third quarter to put away the Pirates. The third quarter score was 15-6 for Whitehorse while the other three periods were two point differences or less.
Scoring for Green River against Monticello was Taylor Johnson with 11 plus 8 rebounds, Sydney Thayn with 10 points plus 10 rebounds and 3 assists, Savannah Williams with 7 points, Kira Engleman with 4 points, Presley Lovato with 3 points and Robin Nelson with 2 points.
Scoring against Whitehorse was Johnson with 13 points plus she had 24 rebounds, Engleman with 10 points, Nelson with 7 points, Thayn with 5 points and Justice Hatfield with 2 points.
The region 19 final records were Monticello at 9-1, Whitehorse at 8-2, Green River at 6-4, Monument Valley at 3-6, Pinnacle Academy at 3-7 and Navajo Mountain at 0-9.
