The Emery High Lady Spartans believe they are ready to play in this week’s opening round of the Utah State 2-A girls basketball tournament after a pair of blowout wins last week to close out the region season. Emery defeated Grand on Tuesday night in Castle Dale 52-20 and then traveled to Wasatch Academy on Thursday night and defeated the Lady Tigers 72-31 in a game that was not this close.
Emery will now face Rockwell this Friday evening at Orem High School in the first round. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Emery closes the season with an 18-3 record while Rockwell possesses a record of 6-15. While it is always tough to use score comparisons as a basis to figure who will win and lose, it is interesting that Rockwell barely defeated Wasatch Academy three weeks ago 44-41 after having lost to them earlier in the season.
Senior Hannah Dyer was the leading scorer in the two games this week, as she often is. Dyer scored 16 against Grand and followed that up with 27 against the Tigers. Ashlynn Allred gave the Lady Spartans a great one two punch as she scored 9 and 17 points in the two games.
At Wasatch Academy Emery led 29-12 after the first quarter and then extended the lead in the second period by winning that quarter 23-3. They led at the half 52-15. As I said, the game wasn’t that close. Also scoring in the game were Camrey Johnson with 8 points, Bailey Rasmussen with 6, Ashton Bell with 5, Aniston Curtis with 4 and Bayler Griffin and Lexi Huntington with 2 points each. Kelsie Cox scored one point.
In the Grand game, Bell and Johnson each scored 5, Huntington, Cox and Rasmussen each scored 4, Paytn Jeffs scored 3 and Cassidy Labrum scored 2. Emery led in this game 39-9 at the half as this also wasn’t a close game.
After finishing second at last year’s 2-A tournament, the Lady Spartans are expected to give everyone else a run for their money in games this season. Without coming right out and saying the Lady Spartans are the favorite, you can take it at face value and come out and support this team in their journey. The state tourney will continue the following week Feb. 27-March 1 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
