The Emery High wrestling team traveled to Richfield last weekend and participated in the 2-A Divisionals with all the other 2-A teams in the state. Emery and region 15 matched up with the southern region as they set the placement of wrestlers in this week’s state tournament at the Maverik Center in West Valley City.
Emery had 14 wrestlers in the tournament and nine of them advanced to the state meet. That meet will begin for the 2-A teams this Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.
Matt Mecham at 160 pounds and Zach West at 220 pounds won their divisions and will be in good position to bring home a championship when this is over Saturday night.
Mecham opened the day with a pin against a wrestler from Enterprise, followed that up with a 6-1 decision over a wrestler from Delta and then closed it out with another pin against an Enterprise wrestler. Mecham currently has a 26-10 record.
West also started with a pin over an Enterprise wrestler and he followed that up with a pin against a South Sevier wrestler and then won the championship with another pin, this time over a wrestler from Delta. West is now 34-5 for the year.
Ryan Cox, at 145 pounds, made it to the championship round but lost to a wrestler from Delta. He had earlier defeated wrestlers from Kanab, Beaver and Enterprise. Cox has a 29-9 season record.
McKoy Christiansen, at 120 pounds, and David Bird, at 126 pounds, each finished third and could also do some damage at this week’s meet. Christiansen won three of four matches while Bird won four of five only losing to the eventual winner.
Justin Jennings also at 126 pounds finished seventh and will travel to the meet as will Logan Ewell at 106 pounds, Hunter Hatch at 170 pounds and Duncan Thomas at 220 pounds. These last three finished eighth.
