Although it is hard, the Emery High Spartan baseball team proved that it is not impossible to come back through the loser’s bracket to win a state title. After having a day of the 2-A tournament rained out last week, the play continued on Tuesday with Emery playing Beaver at 11 am with the winner playing Grand for the 2-A title right after for the championship. The games were held at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Emery had a little patchwork pitching throughout the day but the pitching was backed up by an offensive machine as the Spartans pounded out forty nine base hits and scored forty one runs over the three games and soundly defeated each opponent. Emery defeated Beaver to begin the day by the score of 13-6 and then defeated Grand 12-3 to force a third game which Emery then won 16-9 to repeat as the 2-A state champion.
With every batter in the line-up contributing to the wins and with five different pitchers throwing some innings throughout the day, Emery showed why they were ranked number one all season.
In the words of Coach Steve Gordon, “Holy crap, we did it.” What else needs to be said. Congratulations to the Emery High Spartans for a season worth remembering.
