Emery High football held their annual black and gold game last Friday night in preparation for the start of the 2014 season which begins this Friday night in the Salt Lake valley with a game at Summit Academy.
After two weeks of practice including four days of two-a-days, the Emery High team is divided in half and plays a game against itself, partially to check the progress of the players and to check the progress of the team as a whole.
In this season’s game, the black team easily defeated the white team 38-0 with much of the success due to the ability of senior running back/linebacker Matt Mecham. Mecham was a force on both sides of the ball.
The coaching staff was pleased with many things they saw and now the players have this week’s practices to hone their skills in preparation for the season opener.
The Spartans will be a young team this season as they will start around equal numbers of juniors and sophomores and three to four seniors. Although young, those players are skilled and many are just a little bit feisty which should make for an interesting season.
Emery will play in the 3-A North region again this season. The region includes teams from Judge Memorial, Morgan, Grantsville, Union, Carbon and Emery High schools.
