For the Emery High baseball and softball teams, the 2014 season is rapidly coming to a close and the 2014 play-off season is almost here. For the Spartan baseball team, their placement for the upcoming 2-A state tournament is now in jeopardy after losing at home last week to North Sevier.
Spartans are now are tied in losses with Grand High and need some help from Monticello to stay the first seed.
The Lady Spartans are currently in second place in region 15 with a 4-3 record and a single game to go but unfortunately that game is against San Juan, the region leader at 6-0 and the defending state champion and the favorite to win the title this season. South Sevier at 3-3 has games with North Sevier and Grand and could put the Spartans into third place in the region.
The Emery softball team last week defeated North Sevier in their lone region contest by the score of 8-2 behind the pitching and hitting of Ashton Bell. Bell pitched the entire game and limited the Wolves to six base hits and two runs. Ashton also contributed a double and a homerun with the bat as the Spartans got a much-needed win. Hailee Beckstead and Makayla Clark also had doubles in the game as Emery had nine hits.
The Emery baseball team is currently in first place in
region 15 with a 9-2 record and Grand is a half game back with an 8-2 record. The regular season concludes this week with the playoffs starting
next weekend. Grand will face Monticello and San Juan in their final two games with the need to win them both to stay even with the Spartans, supposing that Emery defeats a not-very-good San Juan team as expected this Tuesday.
Last week Emery lost unexpectedly to North Sevier after making costly fielding errors late in the game, something the Spartans had avoided up to now. Junior Dillon Wilstead lost his second straight game after Emery committed three errors that gave the Wolves unearned runs.
With Emery leading 3-1 after five innings, North Sevier scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to have the visiting fans whooping and hollering. Emery scored once in the bottom of that inning and once in the bottom of the seventh inning but North Sevier added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to claim the region win. Marco Mota had a double and Ridge Nielson had a double and a triple to lead Emery’s offense. Emery had eight base hits to five for North Sevier.
All the placement for the state tournament is up in the air as the final week begins. Beaver leads region 13 with a 9-2 record but is followed closely by Millard, Delta and Parowan with 8-3 records. Millard and Beaver play each other twice this week as do Delta and Parowan.
Manti and Gunnison are tied atop of region 16 with 10-1 records and those two teams also play each other twice this week. Summit Academy is sitting at 8-2 and is in third place.
The Lady Spartans will also play at Carbon this Thursday and then will conclude the season next week with three non-region contests as they prepare for the 2-A state tournament the following week in Spanish Fork.
The Emery baseball team, after playing San Juan Tuesday at home, will wait for the other games to conclude to know where they will play on Saturday May 3rd for the beginning of the state play-offs. Good luck to both Emery teams.
