Emery softball downs South Sevier 14-4

After having gave a game away against the very same team the previous week, the Emery High Lady Spartan softball team made sure not to repeat the effort this week. Emery hosted South Sevier last Tuesday in Castle Dale at the high school fields and this time they won the game 14-4 in five innings.
Offense was not the problem in the first game, mental mistakes were. In this game Emery was in the game the entire way and made sure that the win was going to be theirs. Emery made only one error in this game, which cost a run.
In this game every Emery batter got on base and eight of the nine scored at least a run. Ashton Bell, Hailee Beckstead, Kambrie Hinkins and Gentry Noyes each hit homeruns. Bell, Taylor Payne and Abby Jacobsen each hit a double. Emery had 11 base hits in the game of which seven were for extra bases. Emery also garnered seven walks and three players got hit by a pitch. Emery had 21 players on base in five innings of play for them offensively.
Emery scored twice in the first inning only to have the Rams tie the score in the top of the third inning. Emery went back up by two in the bottom of that inning only to have the Rams respond with two more runs in the top of the fourth and Emery fans were just a little nervous that it might happen again.
But the nervousness was for naught as Emery scored five times in the fourth inning and five more times in the fifth inning to secure the win. Emery even got out of the top of the fifth with a scoreless Ram inning after two players got on base with only one out.
In the first inning, Noyes walked to lead off the game and Bell followed with her homerun. In the third inning, singles by Beckstead, Jacobsen and Makayla Clark scored the first two runners.
In the fourth inning, Hinkins led off with a homerun. Jadree Huntington followed with a walk and then Noyes hit a homerun. Bell and Payne had back to back doubles followed by a walk to Clark, a single by Jacobsen and a walk to Hinkins. Emery had the bases loaded when the last out occurred.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Emery was up 9-4 when they began their at bat. Noyes got hit by a pitch and Beckstead followed with a homerun. Bell walked, Payne got hit by a pitch, Jacobsen doubled, Clark got hit by a pitch and on a ground out by Hinkins, the fifth run of the inning scored and the game was over.
Emery will be tested next week when they play at Grand on Tuesday and San Juan at home on Wednesday. San Juan is the defending state champion. On Saturday, Emery will travel to Payson to play in an all-day tournament, mostly against bigger schools.
