The Emery High Lady Spartans ran their season record to 11-2 and their region record to 3-0 with a pair of region wins last week. On Tuesday, Emery traveled to Salina and played the North Sevier Wolves and won the game 57-43 with four different members of the team scoring in double figures. On Thursday, the Lady Spartans hosted South Sevier at the Spartan Center and defeated the Lady Rams 35-27.
While the final score in the game against South Sevier indicates that it was a close game, in reality it was not. Emery led 11-5 after the first quarter 22-14 at the half and after winning the third quarter 9-2 led at the end of that period 31-16. South Sevier rallied in the final quarter against Emery’s starters, won the period 11-4 and gave us the final score to make that score close.
Hannah Dyer led the team with 10 points and was the only Spartan in double figures. Bailey Rasmussen scored 7 with Ashton Bell scoring 6 and Ashlynn Allred scoring 5 points. Also scoring were Emily Olsen with 3 points and Kelsie Cox and Cassidy Labrum with 2 points each.
In this game, Emery started each of the first three quarters strong only to see South Sevier end the period on their own run to cut the lead. In the first period, Emery led 6-0 before the two team battled to a 5-5 tie. In the second quarter, Emery led 9-4 and then were outscored 5-2 over the final minutes of that period. In the third quarter, Emery led 3-2 and finished the quarter on a 6-0 run. In the final quarter, Emery did not score until they made a free throw with a 1:34 left in the game. Emery did miss a lot of free throws, layups and short shots in that final period.
At North Sevier, Emery trailed the Wolves 12-11 after the first quarter as the Spartans defense did not keep up with their opponent’s offense. Emery grabbed a small lead in the second quarter as they won the period 14-9 and led at the half 25-21, still a close game. Emery broke open the game in the third quarter as they won the period 16-4 and had a 16-point lead. North Sevier won the final quarter 18-16 to get to the final score.
Bailey Rasmussen might have played her best game of the season in this game as she led the team in scoring with 15 points and Bailey also had 10 rebounds as she dominated inside the paint.
Ashton Bell also might have played her best game statistically wise as she scored 13 points had 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Allred scored 11 points and Dyer scored 10 points as they gave the team four players with 10 points or more. Allred finished with 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals while Dyer had 5 rebounds.
Also scoring for Emery were Labrum with 3 points, Cox and Olsen with 2 points and Lexie Huntington with 1 point. Emery will travel to Grand this Tuesday and then they will host Wasatch Academy this Thursday night as they look to keep their region record perfect for the season.
