Martha Lacey Fazzio
CASTLE DALE – The world lost an angel Martha Lacey Fazzio Nov. 25, 2001. She was born Dec. 24, 1914 in Sunnyside to Ross and Filomena A. Fazzio. She had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary. She knew no strangers. The love she carried had no boundaries.
In her younger days she held three jobs all the time at the Round Station in Kenilworth, collected monies at dances in Helper and worked at many cafes in Helper. She worked at the Point After and loved every minute of it. Everyone knew her as Aunt Martha or just “Granda Ma.” If you couldn’t find her at the Point After you could always find her at bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ross and Filomena, brothers Ike, Sam, Joe, sisters
Josephine, Mary and Minnie, and grandchildren, the love of her life, Ronnie, Mistie * Jimmie Lee. Also great grandchildren Taz and Ika Faye. She is survived by her daughter Faye Lee Martin of Castle Dale, grandson Ike J. Lee, great grandchildren Randi Lee and Shyeanne. She loved and also adopted Sharon LaRose, Sue Ann Lee, Jake, Aliese, Sammi and Cody Thompson, LaRain and Kelly, and all the kids of Helper and Price who knew her. She had a heart full of love for all her nephews and nieces also.
No one will ever know how much this little lady will be missed and how many live she has touched. A visitation will be held at the Fausett Mortuary Chapel in Price Thursday, Nov. 29 from 5-7:30 p.m. with a rosary service beginning at 7:30. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Helper on Friday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Helper under the direction of Fausett Mortuary in Price. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the St. Anthony’s Church.
Merlyn Martha Hansen Maxwell
MOAB – Merlyn Martha Hansen Maxwell, died 24 Nov 2001 at the Emery County Care Center. She was born June 27, 1906 in Richfield, to David Olsen Hansen and Josephine Elizabeth Westman. She married Philander (Bud) Maxwell June 12, 1937 in Richfield, solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple July 9, 1982. Bud passed away April 12, 1981.
She attended schools and graduated from high school in Richfield, Utah. She attended BYU for two years and received a teaching certificate, then called a Normal Course Degree. She taught 5th grade in Kanab and Carbon for nine years.
In 1936, she moved to Moab and taught 5th grade for one year, then she met and married Bud Maxwell. She stopped teaching for 10 years to start her family.
In 1947, School Superintendent Helen M. Knight talked her into coming back to teach choral music part-time, a job that paid $100 per month and soon led to full-time teaching in all grades. For seven years, she taught from kindergarten to 12th grade and produced groups that performed everything from elementary programs to Christmas and Easter cantatas. Her high school choral groups were well known for containing as many boys as girls, mainly because of her humor and popularity. She later taught at both elementary schools for a total of 20 years.
She began her teaching career in 1927 and primarily taught music in all grades from kindergarten to 12th grade during her career in Moab. She retired from the Grand County School system in 1971 and was named to the Circle of Honor this year.
Maxwell taught during the uranium boom, which was a real challenge because of tremendous community growth. During the boom, she taught in two buildings, the now empty old Middle School, and the library/auditorium behind it, which later burned. She also taught classes in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers building next to Star Hall, and in the old LDS Church, now the Moab Arts and Recreation Center. She did not have a room of her own, and claimed only a shelf assigned to hold her music. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She retired in 1971 after 44 years of filling the lives of children and young adults with music. She started quilting after she retired and made many quilts for her family.
She was an active member of the LDS Church and served in numerous calling in the LDS Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Richard) Gillette, Tooele; Elizabeth, Sweetie (Maurice) Anderson, Ferron; son, Phil (Myra) Maxwell, Phoenix, Ariz; nine grandchildren: Melissa and Maxwell (Teresa Ziems) Anderson, Elizabeth Drain, Richard (Erica) Gillette, Hilary (Calvin) Peck, Shane and Josh Maxwell, Lisa (Mark) Roady and Dane Dashney; nine great-grandchildren; brother Allen Hansen, Richfield. Preceded in death by: husband, Bud; son, David; parents; brothers David Hansen, Merrill Hansen, Donald Hansen, sister Elva Hansen Judd, grandson Chris Gillette.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov 28, 2001 at 12 (noon) in the Moab LDS 2nd Ward Chapel 475 West 400 North There will be a viewing at Moab Memorial Mortuary 400 East Locust Lane, Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the chapel. Internment at Grand Valley Cemetery.
Maye Ihler Shanley
ORANGEVILLE – Maye Ihler Shanley passed away Nov. 20, 2001, at her home. Born May 2, 1924, to Gunnar Olsen and Orpha Stilson Ihler in Orangeville. She married William Boley Shanley Dec. 28, 1947, later divorced. She married Lee C. Knowles Sept. 1963, later divorced.
Survived by children Michael W. (Geri) Shanley, Monica (Mike) Paluso, and Shawn Ihler (Shauna) Shanley all of Centerville, grandchildren; Megan and Melissa Shanley, Tara, Tiffany, and Chad Paluso, Catie and Colbie Shanley. Brothers: Elwood (Joan) and Dean (Bonnie) Ihler, special nephew Marty (Stacy) Mower and their sons, M.J. and Ashton. Preceded in death by her parents, brother Richard and sister Norma Mower.
Her children and grandchildren were the greatest part of her life. She retired from U. S. West in 1989 and worked for JC Penny telemarketing for the past nine years.
Funeral services were Nov. 24, in the Orangeville LDS Chapel at 12 Noon. Friends called Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial was at the Orangeville Cemetery.
Maria “PePe” Astorga Heer
EAST CARBON CITY/PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA, Spain – Maria Josefa Victoria Astorga Riera Heer, a strong brave woman lost a two year battle with ovarian cancer Nov. 22, 2001 at home.
Maria was bound and determined to try and win the fight, but it wasn’t to be. Maria was and will be an inspiration to her family and friends. She was born in Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain March 5, 1943 to Manuel Astorga and Antonia Riera Astorga. Married Jerry Heer Sept. 5, 1962 in Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain while Jerry was stationed in the U.S. Navy.
Maria is survived by husband, Jerry Heer; daughter, Kris Heer and Abie Velasquez; joy of her life, granddaughter, Cheyanne; mother-in-law, Genevieve Heer; sister-in-law, Judy (Leslie) Hamilton, all of East Carbon; sister-in-law, Joan (Bud) Pilling, Price; special daughter-in-law, Janet, California, whom she thought the world of and loved very much; mother, Antonia Astorga, Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain; sister, Andrea and Pedro, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain; sister, Milogros, Madrid, Spain; sister-in-law, Maria, Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Maria was preceded in death by son, Michael D. Heer; father-in-law, Ernest M. Heer, both of East Carbon; father, Manuel Astorga; brother, Alfonso Astorga; uncle, Enrique Astorga, all of Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain.
The family would like to thank some very special friends who provided excellent care during Maria’s illness, Jeanna, Betty, Jackie, Judy and Valerie. The family thanks you very much. The family also wishes to thank Coram Health Care, Interwest Medical, Rocky Mountain Health Care and staff, and especially Darlene and Lorie. We would also like to thank Dr. Bott and his staff from Provo, Dr. Nichols, Dr. Cox and their staffs for an outstanding job caring for Maria. We couldn’t have asked for better. Special thanks to Sherry King of Castleview Hospital for her excellent care of doing chemotherapy and for just being her friend.

Cellia Huff
PRICE – Cellia Woodward Fossat Huff, age 83, passed away Nov. 20, 2001 in Price.
She was born Oct. 20, 1918 in Orangeville, to Franklin and Martha Tatton Woodward. Married Victor Fossat Oct. 27, 1938 in Castle Dale. He died Dec. 16, 1963. Married Dennis Huff March 27, 1970 in Carlin, Nev. He died April 27, 2000.
Cellia was an excellent seamstress and she also loved knitting and quilting. One of her favorite things was crocheting everyone Christmas stockings. Cellia loved the outdoors and the many wonderful years she spent at her place in Joe’s Valley. Her greatest joy in life was the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandkids.
Survived by two daughters, one son and spouses, Darlene (Karl) Lowe, Salt Lake City; Ellene (Dan) Verde, Price; Ralph (Sandra) Fossat, Helper; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Nov. 23, noon, Mitchell Funeral Home. Family was at Mitchell’s Friday one hour prior to services. Interment, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.
John J. Fish
HELPER – John “Jack” Joe Fish, age 71, passed away Nov. 21, 2001 at Mountain View Hospital in Payson.
He was born Dec. 28, 1929 in Castle Gate, to Joesph and Ada Hardy Fish. Married Ilene Jackson June 25, 1955 in Castle Gate.
Member of the LDS Church. “Jack” was born and raised in Castle Gate where he attended local schools prior to serving with the U.S. Army in Korea. Retired member of the UMWA District 22 Castle Gate Local. “Jack” was an avid fisherman, hunter, and he loved the great outdoors. “Jack” also enjoyed planting a garden, fly tying, wrapping fishing poles and walking with his special friend, Ruben Bera.
Survived by wife, Ilene Fish; sons, John and Brenda Fish, Clyde Fish, all of Helper; twin brother, William “Bill” (Gloria) Fish, Tooele; sister, Bernice (Wade) Nelson, Salt Lake City; and grandchildren, Amber Fish, April Fish, and Justin Fish. Preceded in death by parents; and an infant brother.
Funeral service Tuesday, Nov. 27, 11 a.m., Helper LDS Stake Center. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Monday evening, 6 to 8 p.m., and at the LDS Stake Center Tuesday one hour prior to services. Interment, Cliffview Cemetery, Price.
Taro Aoyagi
HELPER – Our wonderful husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Taro Aoyagi, age 83, passed away Nov. 22, 2001 in Price.
He was born Dec. 6, 1917 in Sunnyside, to Kurakichi Aoyagi and Shige Nakamura. Married Mariko Ikebuchi July 1945 in Price.
Taro was educated in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan. Served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a longtime resident of Carbon County and in 1953 he moved from Price to Helper. Taro worked in various coal mines in the area for 46 years and in 1979 retired from Spring Canyon. He was a proud member of the UMWA District 22. He loved hunting, fishing and growing gardens until his illness six years ago. Taro died the same way he lived, with love, honor, dignity and respect.
Survived by wife, Mariko Aoyagi, Helper; son, Harry (Mary Ann) Aoyagi, Waxhaw, N.C.; daughter, Linda Cooper, Helper; daughter-in-law, Pat Aoyagi, Sandy; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents; and son, Leonard Aoyagi.
Memorial services will be held at a later date under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Price.
Lee Carbajal
GREEN RIVER/GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Lee Carbajal, age 89, passed away peacefully Nov. 26, 2001 at the home of his daughter, Frankie Anderson in Green River.
He was born Aug. 19, 1912 in Yahualica, Jalisco, Mexico, to Braulio Carbajal and Maria Lopez. Married Cecelia Aguilera Sept. 22, 1932 in Grand Junction, Colo. She died June 22, 1973.
Survived by four daughters and spouses, Victoria (Don) Maldonado, Chonita (Max) Atencio, both of Pueblo, Colo.; Barbara (John) Strojny, Taylor, Mich.; and Frankie (Gary) Anderson, Green River. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents; wife, Cecilia; and son John William (Blinky).
The family expresses sincere gratitude to their brother-in-law, Gary Anderson; granddaughter-in-law, Claire Maldonado; and friend, Allen Clark for their care and love. We would also like to thank Mel Ray and the staff at the Green River Medical Center.

John Milovich
PRICE – John Milovich, age 82, passed away Nov. 22, 2001 at Castle Country Care Center in Price.
Born Nov. 24, 1918 in Winton, Wyo., to Isaac Milovich and Millie Demich Milovich. Married Bessie Zamantakis April 7, 1960 in Price.
John was a long time resident of Carbon County. Served in the U.S. Army during World War II. John worked in various coal mines where he was known as an honest and hard worker to his fellow miners. Member of the UMWA Kaiser Steel Local 9958 where he retired from in 1979. Honorary life member of the Price Elks Lodge 1550.
Survived by wife, Bessie Milovich, Price; sons, John Milovich, San Francisco, Calif.; Mark and Diana Milovich, Missouri Valley, Iowa; Luke Milovich, Los Angeles, Calif.; brothers, Louie Milovich, Mike Milovich Sr., Ted Milovich; sisters, Mary Dimitrich, Angie Johnson; grandchildren, Mark John Jr. Milovich, Missouri Valley, Iowa; Elliott Milovich, Missouri Valley, Iowa; Miranda Milovich, Missouri Valley, Iowa; and Seth Milovich, Missouri Valley, Iowa. Preceded in death by parents; four brothers, Steve, George, Pete and Nick; and two sisters, Sophie Poglajen and Helen Milovich.
Graveside service was Monday, Nov. 26, 1 p.m., Price City Cemetery. Family was at Mitchell’s Funeral Home Monday one hour prior to services.
Paul Carlson
PRICE – Paul Wesley Carlson, age 80, passed Nov. 26, 2001 in Price of natural causes.
Paul was born in Castle Gate Aug. 14, 1921 to Francis Oscar Carlson Sr. and Hazel Luella Checketts Carlson. He married Nolene Tilley Jan. 20, 1945.
A lifelong resident of Carbon and Emery Counties, he retired in 1984 from Fairmont Supply, formerly H&J Supply. He worked for Lion Coal Co. and was the last resident to leave Wattis in 1962. Paul served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a honest, hard-working man. He spent his childhood in Cleveland, with 15 siblings. He always talked about his children and how proud he was of them.
He is survived by wife, Nolene, Price; children, Pauline (Bill) Crump, Sandy; Glenda (Gene) Ciarus, Delta; Jerry (Patty) Carlson, Price; Byron Speirs, Price; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, Gene (Janice) Carlson; Helper; sisters, Colleen (Chuck) Byrge, Carbonville; Rosalie (Max) Mason, Tremonton, Barbara Halverson, Sandy; and Joyce Carlson, St. George. Preceded in death by parents; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, Nov. 28, 11 a.m., at the Cliffview Cemetery, Price. Friends may call at Fausett Mortuary Wednesday, 9:30 to 10:30 a..m. prior to services.
Kevin Winward Day
SALT LAKE CITY-CASTLE DALE-Kevin Winward Day passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Nov. 26, 2001 in Salt Lake City while serving a mission with his parents. Kevin was born on Sept. 10, 1966 in Price to W. Lavon and Marianne Winward Day.
Kevin was sent as a choice spirit and was a joy to everyone who knew him. He was an eagle scout. He was an Elder and a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He delighted in the simple things in life and was an avid BYU sports fan. He won several medals in the Special Olympics. Although his body struggled with many challenges, his spirit was strong. He had a passion for learning and had a deep love of the scriptures. His most cherished possessions were his family, his testimony of the Gospel and of his Savior Jesus Christ.
Kevin is survived by his parents, Lavon and Marianne Day currently serving a mission in Salt Lake City; brothers and sisters, Kerry (Tami) of Roy, Daniece (Kyle) Crump of Peoria, Ariz; Allen (Andrea) of South Weber; Maleah (Justin) Warner of Surprise, Ariz; DeVere (Lynda) of Salt Lake City; Kyle and Donnalee of Ephraim. He is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by grandparents Merrill and LaVerne Humphrey Day and Thane and Evelyn Larsen Winward.
Funeral services will be held on Sat. Dec. 1, 2001 in the Castle Dale Stake Center at 12 noon. There will be a viewing from 10-11:45 a.m. prior to the funeral.
