High Speed chase up Straight Canyon

Deputy Boe Minchey from the Emery County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a high speed chase on Wednesday at 9:20 a.m. Minchey said he was driving north on Main Street in Orangeville when he saw a gold car come off of SR-29 and turned onto Orangeville Main Street. The car was traveling at a high rate of speed and passed a car on a double yellow line. Minchey began to follow the vehicle and turned his lights on indicating he would like the vehicle to stop. The vehicle then passed a state road truck and continued west on SR-29 towards Joe’s Valley. Minchey indicated he checked for the vehicle at the junction of 57 and 29 and again at Cottonwood Canyon but it didn’t look like the vehicle had turned off. He spotted the car far ahead continuing up SR-29. He lost sight of the vehicle around the big hay barn heading up Joe’s Valley.
Deputy Minchey estimated the drivers speed to be well over 120 mph.
The driver continued up SR-29 turning onto a dirt road and going up a road with cabins. Minchey indicated he didn’t know how many suspects were in the vehicle or why they had run from him, so he waited for back-up at the bottom of the dirt road before proceeding. Four other units arrived and they approached a cabin and knocked on the door with no response.
They then called in the license plate number and got a name. The registered owner was just recently released from jail on Sunday from a DUI. The officers contacted the other deputy that had been involved with the DUI arrest. The deputies then contacted the owner of the cabin and asked for permission to enter the cabin if they couldn’t get a response. The first time the officers knocked at a cabin, they weren’t at the right one, so they found the right cabin and knocked there. There was no response. They announced they were police officers and they had permission to enter the cabin from the owner. Then the door opened and a male subject came out. Another male subject was in the cabin and he was the driver of the vehicle.
The two subjects were questioned. They told the deputies they hadn’t seen the flashing police lights which was why they hadn’t stopped.
Minchey said the subject was booked on several charges including driving on a revoked drivers license, failure to install an interlock device, failure to report an accident, failure to yield at the command of a police officer and reckless driving.
Along the way up SR-29, the driver had apparently hit a delineator post and had left the road, small pieces of the vehicle were found at the scene of the accident. Lt. Gayle Jensen did the investigation at the accident scene. The suspect vehicle left that accident site and continued up the road. Those assisting Deputy Minchey included: Capt. Jeff Thomas, Sgt. Tom Harrison, Deputy Shaun Bell and Deputy Riley. The subject, Spencer L. Ivey was 22 years old.
