Envirothon competition held at Castle Valley Outdoors

Utah Envirothon Hosted High School Teams In Emery County
The Utah Envirothon, a natural resource competition for high school students was held recently at the Castle Valley Outdoors, a guest ranch facility near Emery. The event was hosted by the San Rafael Conservation District. Students, advisors and chaperones from teams around the state gathered to test their skills and knowledge about natural resource conservation.
This is the 17th anniversary of the Utah Envirothon. The Envirothon is a natural resource competition for high school students. A five-member team is tested on their knowledge of the state’s natural resources – soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and a current environmental issue. This year’s current issue was sustainable agriculture and its role in healthy communities. Students visit five field stations where they receive additional instruction and a written and hands-on problem solving test is administered without their advisor. They also competed in an oral presentation event where they are judged on their presentation and problem-solving skills.
The Utah Envirothon is sponsored by the Utah Association of Conservation Districts, with broad support from many statewide organizations, agencies and businesses. The San Rafael Conservation District would like to thank Pacificorp for their support of the competition.
The San Rafael Conservation District is a locally elected board. A conservation district is a legal subdivision of the state of Utah governed by a board of five supervisors elected at large from within the district. Its boundaries are based on watershed or county lines.
A conservation district supervisor is responsible for local soil and water conservation programs, just as elected county officials are responsible for county services or school district boards are responsible for education.
