After finishing second in the region behind Tabiona in baseball, Green River completed the season in St George by losing a semi-final game to Wayne High School by the score of 10-3. In the other semi-final, Valley edged Tabiona 4-3. Valley then took the state title over Wayne by the score of 10-0. All games were played at Dixie State College.
Green River had qualified earlier in the week to travel south after defeating Tintic 6-4 in the quarterfinals in a game played in Spanish Fork. In the other three games played on Tuesday, Wayne defeated Wendover 22-3, Valley defeated St Joseph’s 9-1 and Tabiona defeated Piute 4-0.
The Pirates team this season was coached by Tom Hughes. The team consisted of six seniors, six juniors and three freshmen. Seniors TJ Hughes and Chance Pfander led the team with their pitching and defensive play. Hughes played centerfield when not pitching and Chance played shortstop.
The other seniors were Nick Corrigan, Jon Mendez, Lenard Johnson and Hunter Jones. The juniors were Nathan Cox, Nik Shaffer, Jon Salinas, Joe Serafin, Cody Giles and Adam Shumway. The freshmen were Justin Engleman, Tyson Giles and Freddy Escalante.
In the game against Wayne, Green River had a tough first inning, but then recovered nicely. Their bats picked up and defensively they only gave up three runs the rest of the game. TJ Hughes and Chance Phander did the pitching in this game.
Green River was led in this game by strong hits by Jon Mendez.
The game against Tintic was a team effort at the bats as everyone contributed with some big hits at good times. Green River had a lot of nice hits and good base running in this game. Green River finished strong this season and they look forward to next year’s season. In the 1A classification the state tournament is a single elimination tournament without a consolation bracket which allows teams with one loss to keep playing.
