It seems as if summer has just begun and now it feels like it is over, where does time go? The high school football team is at camp this week and once you go to camp the season is right around the corner.
For those who have never been it probably sounds like camp could be a lot of fun but that is not even close to the truth. We go to Nephi along with four other schools, this year probably Delta, Uintah, Juab and Maple Mountain. We will be the smallest school there.
For the four days of camp, and I will probably get shot for divulging this information because it is top secret, we basically eat, sleep and play football. After practicing twice a day and then playing games for a couple of hours, we really have no desire to do anything else.
With this schedule, the kids are usually real good but sometimes slip ups happen because kids will be kids. There is lot to be said for getting them so tired they don’t want to do anything else.
In this day and age it seems if a school wants to compete in a sport then going to camp is a must, there is no more just showing up for the season and being good and winning and it really doesn’t matter the sport, they all have do it.
For me, camp is fun. The associations with the other coaches is invaluable and this is a good time to really get to know them. You know who snores, I do I know because I often wake myself up which really can’t be good for others. You know the food likes and dislikes as you decide where and what to eat. You know if they are like me and just toss their clothes in a bag or if you fold them neatly and have different clothes for every occasion even though it is just camp.
Most of all though, you get to know the players. All players are not created the same and you get to really know them and who they are, not just in football but in life. These associations you value for life, even with those kids that sometimes challenge your niceness factor.
