Letter to the Editor: Voter Apathy

By Lou Sansevero Ferron Utah

On June 24, I was witness to the most disgusting display of apathy I have ever seen. Only 28 percent of registered Emery County Republicans voted in the Republican primary for county commissioner. Twenty-eight percent, that means 72 percent of registered Republicans were too lazy to exercise their most precious Constitutional right.
Don’t kid yourself, this was not just another partisan primary election; this was the election to elect one of our county commissioners since no other party put a challenger forward. My castigation is not over who won or who lost but with the lethargy demonstrated by Emery County Republicans and Republicans in general.
What the heck is wrong with you people? Don’t you realize that apathy, on the national stage, is the reason this country is in the sad state it is today? It is the reason that the present regime ignores the law and the constitution without fear of being reproached and it is the reason elected officials put personal political gain ahead of service to the communities they are sworn to represent. If this country is going to “hell in a hand basket” it is your fault!
It has always amazed me that this apathetic 72 percent comprises the majority of those non-voters that complain the loudest about the state of the nation, the economy, the draconian tax system, the loss of freedom and the ineffectiveness of elected officials; they are living proof of the old adage that “an empty can makes the most noise”.
If my chastisement upsets you, good it was meant to, now do something about it. Don’t write a useless rebuttal justifying your failure with excuses or imaginary reasons for not voting; get involved in politics; educate yourselves on the issues and the candidates and get out and vote in the next election and remember you get that government that you elect, no better.
