Emery Town to Receive Cellular Phone Service

At the August Emery Town Council meeting a representative from Nextel presented the plans for a tower in Emery. She noted that the towers location is imperative. There are two locations that have been suggested for the tower, one is in town and the other is about a quarter mile out of town. Citizens present at the meeting were concerned about the location in town drawing away from future businesses and landscaping. The representative agreed to test the alternate location to see if it is suitable for the tower. She mentioned that the further back towards the mountain the tower is, the spottier the reception will be.
Citizens were concerned about having current contracts with other cellular providers. The representative noted that other providers could bill from that tower to provide service to Emery residents, but that is the providers choice. She agreed to contact Verizon and let them know that the tower was being built.
Nextel has agreed to rent the land from Emery for $700 per month, with a three percent yearly increase. This will provide a significant new source of income to the town of Emery.
Once location is determined and the legal work is done, Nextel can begin building. The tower must be built before 2004 or Nextel will lose their budget. They would like to begin construction around October. This tower will provide cellular service only, there still will be no pay phones available. This tower will provide cellular service to Emery Town as well as reach travelers on I-70. All present agreed that this is a good decision and will benefit Emery greatly.
Glenys Sitterud presented the ATV Ordinance and asked if there were any changes that needed to be made. Suggestions were to include special vehicles, such as dirt bikes or motorcycles. Sitterud noted that all motorcycles are governed by the state. It was suggested to add “ATVs used as implements of husbandry, or other occupational uses, are exempt.” All users from ages 8 to 16 need to have state certification, and all users ages 8 to 18 must wear helmets. All state laws must apply. The town already has a curfew in place for minors. This curfew also applies to ATV usage. There will be a public hearing on the ordinance before the council votes on the issue.
In other business, there was a request to put in benches at the playground. The council approved the benches. The cafe on main street demolition project has had a contractor willing to do the work for free if he can salvage the materials from the building. The council will contact him and work out the details. The fire department has nominated Justin Childs as the new fire chief. The council confirmed his nomination and will send a letter to the county commissioners. The council adjusted the mileage reimbursement rate to 30 cents per mile.
In citizens concerns, there has been a list of names compiled of veterans that are not listed on the monument. They are trying to gather names of anyone who lives or has lived in Emery that has served for the US Military at any time. They would like to have an additional plaque made and placed on the back side of the existing monument and improve the grounds surrounding the monument. They are asking for submissions of any names that they do not already have or names that are not currently on the monument.
