The IronHorse raceway held their first race on Sept. 20. The raceway is located just north of Huntington behind the Huntington Reservoir on the property of Blair Larsen. The track is located on what was originally a horse pasture. The motocross track has become a family project with Blair and Maurdi and their two sons, Dalas and Dylan all involved.
Maurdi said, “When Dalas decided to sell his horse and buy a motorcycle, the boys were out there with rakes and shovels building jumps for their bikes and motorcycles. When, my husband Blair saw what they were doing he decided to help out with a tractor and made the jumps longer and higher and began adding jumps for them. The idea for a motocross track evolved from those first jumps and grew into the IronHorse Raceway. My husband and sons along with Jarod Huntington, John Ellis and Clint Sorensen have been working on the raceway for about a year now. It’s been a lot of fun to see Blair and the boys involved in this project together.
“We hope to have three-four nonpoint races each year. The first year we would be eligible for a points race for the Utah Sportsmen Rider’s Association would be in 2005. You have to attend a lot of meetings in Salt Lake and get on the list in order to host one of these races. The USRA races will draw as many as 600 riders. We had 131 riders for our first race and 500 spectators. We hope to have our second race on Oct. 25. We want to also have a peewee race one weekend that is just for the young riders.
“In our first race we gave out trophies and prizes. I also want to give out plaques for the riders at a future race. We might start a riding club where the riders would pay a fee to belong to the club and then they could use the track to practice, or they could use the track if they help with maintaining the track. There is a lot of maintenance work that goes into a track of this kind. We are getting a lot of word of mouth advertising and riders are showing up to practice.
“This project has been Blair’s passion and its great to see how it all came together. Blair and the others designed the track themselves and did a really professional job,” said Maurdi.
Dalas participated in his first race in March at Carbon and has raced twice in Delta. His race on the hometrack was his fourth race. For more information about the IronHorse Raceway contact the Larsens at 687-9273. The track is located at 1315 North 200 East Larsen Lane near Huntington.
