Last Friday evening the Emery High Football team held their annual black and gold game in preparation for the season opener this Friday night in Castle Dale at 7 p.m. Emery will open the season at home as they host Summit Academy. Summit Academy finished second last season in the 2-A ranks. These two also met on the field to start last season and the Spartans lost in a torrential rainstorm.
Emery will start the season with home games this Friday and next Friday, August 21 and August 28. The second game is with Canyon View High School out of Cedar City. Emery will then travel to Delta and to Manti the following two weeks before they come home again for their annual homecoming game, this year against Carbon High.
At the black and gold game, the younger players played the first and third quarters with the older players playing the other two periods. The white team coached by Jon Faimalo and Chris Justice defeated the black team coached by Eric Mortensen and Russ Willson. Senior running back Bryce Dugmore and junior running back Ashton Dieli plus junior quarterback Zac Jorgensen made a difference in the game.
Junior wide receiver Kolton Butler looked good catching the ball.
Emery still plays in a region with Juan Diego, Morgan, Grantsville and Union besides Carbon and it will still be a challenge playing these bigger schools but the Spartans after weeks of practice and camp are ready for the challenge.
