On Saturday, the Emery County Search and Rescue was involved in two rescues. They assisted a man with a broken foot in Eagle Canyon and later that evening were called to Ferron Mountain where a man had fallen from a cliff.
“On my way to minding my own business at a wedding reception on Ferron Mountain, I got caught in an emergency. This emergency allowed me the opportunity of experiencing the effective personnel of the Emery County Sheriff’s office and the Emery County Search and Rescue squad and to be quite blunt, they were amazing.
“An individual had gone off a cliff about 11 miles above Millsite State Park. Within an hour there were an amazing number of emergency people there to assist at this remote location including an ambulance and a medical helicopter.
“They all came well prepared for this emergency and if I understood correctly, both squad’s personnel are always prepared and their trucks are stocked and ready to go at a moment’s notice for moments just like this.
“The search and rescue team under the direction of Brad Reed performed efficiently effectively and timely and all appeared to know their job without any questions having to be asked. The rope guru, as Ken Eley was fondly called by the deputies on scene, was absolutely amazing with the ropes and knots and everything that had to go over the side of the mountain to protect both the rescuers and the victim. He spoke and they did, no questions asked, and everything needed was in somebody’s bag of equipment readily available. Eley’s knowledge and skill in this type of action is invaluable to the county.
“From those that went over the side to bring the victim out to those that stayed on top to do their job to get everybody back on top, they were ready to do the job required of them. There is an old adage that practice makes perfect and it was on display at this site.
“It should make us all sleep better at night knowing that we have emergency personnel living amongst us that are so skillfully trained and so willing to assist those in need. My hat is off to them. Thanks so much for all that they do.”
The victim in Ferron Canyon suffered broken ribs and a broken leg and an injured eye socket.
