Last week at the Utah State 2-A volleyball championships held at Utah Valley University Delta High got revenge for last season’s loss to Enterprise High by defeating the Wolves 3-2 in the championship game Saturday evening in the UCCU Center on the UVU campus. Emery High finished in seventh place in the tournament after posting a 2-2 record and losing the final game to Kanab on Saturday.
Emery High played four games and each game went to five sets before a winner was decided. The Lady Spartans were the number three seed out of region 15 and their opening tournament game was against the second seed from region 16 South Summit. The Emery-South Summit scores were 25-13, 20-25, 18-25, 25-17 and 15-13.
Emery then faced South Sevier in the quarterfinals. South Sevier was the number four seed from region 13 but the Rams had upset the number one team from region 14, Rowland Hall in their opening game. South Sevier defeated Emery by the scores of 25-20, 18-25, 15-25, 25-20 and 15-11.
The loss kicked the Emery team into the consolation bracket. On Saturday morning, Emery defeated Maeser Prep by the scores of 26-24, 18-25, 23-25, 25-17 and 15-13 to advance to the Fifth place/Seventh place game Saturday afternoon. Emery faced the Lady Cowboys of Kanab High and lost again in five by the scores of 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 25-17 and 9-15.
North Summit defeated South Sevier in the third place/fourth place game and San Juan defeated Rowland Hall in the sixth place/eighth place game.
With no juniors on this season’s team, the Lady Spartans will be young next season but with several younger players seeing a lot of action this season, the Spartans will be ready by the time fall rolls around again.
Kris Bell, Shanae Butler and Jen Jewkes are the coaches for the team.
