The Emery High track teams traveled to Dixie High School last Saturday after hosting the Darrell Gardner Invitational on Tuesday. The warm weather in St George was well appreciated by the entrants after the cold, windy earlier meet.
In St George, Paytn Jeffs was the lone Spartan victor as she won the high jump with a jump of 4’11. Ashlyn Allred ran second in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters despite having her best times of the season. A freshman out of Enterprise is determined to outrun the Emery senior this season but the Emery senior is determined to win when it counts next month. Allred is just getting back to full strength after a broken foot.
Four of the six fastest sprinters in the state this season are in the 2-A ranks. Also scoring points for the girl’s team were Erin Hurst in distance races as she finished sixth in the 3200 meters and seventh in the 1600 meters. Camrey Johnson finished eighth in the 300 meter hurdles and Laryssa Guymon was seventh in the discus.
Raymond Brazier was the lone emery boy to score points as he finished sixth in the high jump and seventh in the javelin. The boy’s sprint medley relay team of Ashton Dieli, Logan cox, Kolton Butler and Matt Mecham finished fourth and the Emery 4×400 relay team of Jaxon Bradley, Lane Taylor, Ty Funk and Jake Jensen finished seventh.
At the Emery track meet, the Spartan girls finished third behind Carbon and Manti with Green River in tenth spot in the twelve team affair. The Emery boys were in fifth place behind Uintah, Manti, San Juan and Carbon with Green River in seventh spot behind Duchesne.
Placing for the Pirate boys were Joe Serafin in the 100 meters in third place, fifth place in the 200 meters and third place in the long jump. Tyrell Shumway finished second in the javelin and Corbin Mecham was second in shot put and Jon Mendez was tied for sixth in the high jump.
Placing for the Pirate girls were Cassidee Moore in fifth place in the javelin and Savannah Williams in eighth place in that event. Williams was also sixth in the high jump.
For the Emery boys, Ashton Dieli finished sixth in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles. Daryl Guymon was eighth in the 300 hurdles. In the 3200 meters, Ty Funk was third, Jake Jensen was fourth, Alex Stilson was fifth and Lane Taylor was eighth. In the 400 meters, Logan Cox was in fifth place and Matt Mecham was in sixth place. Ty Funk was in eighth place in the 800 meters. Justin Jennings was fifth in the high jump and Raymond Brazier was sixth in that same event. Brazier was also fifth in the javelin. Kolton Butler was fourth in the discus and Koby Butler was sixth in the shot put and Nathan Potter was seventh in the shot put.
For Emery girls, Ashlyn Allred was first in the 100 meters and Paytn Jeffs was first in the high jump. Erin Hurst was first in the 1600 meters and the girls sprint medley relay team of Camrey Johnson, Jeffs, Allred and Hurst was first in that event.
Laryssa Guymon was second in the discus and eighth in the shot put with Chyanne Carter coming in fourth in the shot put. Jeffs was second in the long jump and Johnson was seventh. Camrey was also seventh in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. Allyson Woolsey finished fourth inthe 400 meters and third in the 800 meters.
Carbon High School hosted the Eastern Utah Farm Bureau track meet last Saturday.
The track meet was only for schools from Eastern Utah and they came from Manila on the Wyoming border to Whitehorse close to Arizona, 14 schools in all.
Uintah won the boys meet with Union second and San Juan third while Union took the girls side with Grand second and Carbon in third place.
The Emery girls finished sixth and the Lady Spartans had three first place finishes. Erin Hurst won both the 3200 meters and the 800 meters while Paytn Jeffs won the high jump.
The Emery boys scored six points and finished down the list.
Erin Hurst, a sophomore at Emery High, is quite a different runner than last season when she began her high school career. Last season she looked as if she was just happy to finish these distance races. This season that has all changed. In the 3200 meters last week, Hurst took the lead right from the beginning and by the halfway point she led by about eighty meters. Erin ran away from the field at this point. She won the race by over a half of a lap and constantly increased her lead and sprinted to the finish. Her face expressed joy with the win.
Junior Paytn Jeffs set a new personal best in the high jump with a jump of five feet five inches as she won the meet and is a strong contender to win a state title. Jeffs cleared the new height and could probably go higher with the ease in which she cleared the bar. Jeffs also finished third in the long jump.
After Jeffs and Hurst, Laciejo Funk was the only other Spartan that placed and she placed in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. Funk finished third in the 200 and sixth in the other race.
Also placing for the Pirate boys were Joe Serafin in the 100 meters with a second place finish, Kyle Johnson in the 800 meters with a fourth place finish and a sixth place finish in the long jump and Corbin Mecham in the shot put with a second place finish. The 4×100 meter relay team finished sixth. Cassidee Moore finished third in the javelin and scored the points for the Lady Pirate team.
Ty Funk finished fifth for the Emery boys in the 3200 meters and Jaxon Bradley finished eighth for Emery in the 1600 meters. Chase Jewkes finished eighth in the javelin. The BYU invitational will take place this Friday and Saturday in Provo as the season is rapidly coming to a close.
Region meets will take place next week and the state meets will follow the following week back at BYU.
