Spartan baseball holds first in region spot

The Emery High baseball team solidified their hold on first place in region 15 last week with wins over Monticello and San Juan. On Tuesday, Emery traveled to Monticello and defeated the host team 20-7 and then on Friday, Emery hosted San Juan and defeated the Broncos 13-0. Emery also played a non-region contest against rival Carbon at the Spartan Field and the Spartans won this game 5-2 despite being outhit in the game 9 to 4.
Against San Juan Dillon Wilstead took the mound and allowed just two base hits in the game, both singles, and struck out seven in the five-inning affair. Those two singles were San Juan’s only base runners in the game.
Emery scored seven runs in the second inning and six in the fourth inning in securing the win. In the second inning, Mark Debry led off with a double followed by a ground out by Tanner Lake. Tristan Deabenderfer then singled followed by Race Nielson hitting a double and Easton Gordon singling. Emery went back to the top of the line-up and Ridge Nielson singled followed by Ethan Tuttle with a double and Wilstead with a triple. Tyson Roper then singled for Emery’s last base runner of the inning.
In the fourth inning, Tuttle got hit by a pitch as he batted lead-off in the inning. Wilstead singled, Roper got walked, Debry singled and Lake got walked before Emery got an out. After two were out, Gordon singled and Ridge singled and Tuttle got out to end the inning.
Against Monticello, Ridge started the game on the mound and picked up the win and Tuttle closed out the game. The two Spartan pitchers gave up eight base hits and struck out 10 batters.
Emery scored three in the first inning, eight in the second inning, six in the third inning, two in the fourth inning and one in the fifth inning, the final inning. Monticello scored once in the third inning and three times in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Emery had 20 base hits in the game with Wilstead and Roper hitting homeruns, Ridge and Bryce Dugmore hitting triples and Ridge, Tuttle, Tel Gardner, Lake, Debry and Race Nielson hitting doubles with Tuttle hitting two of those.
In the Carbon game, the Dinos scored first as Cole Fossat hit a home run in the first inning off Emery pitcher Bryce Dugmore. Emery tied the score in the bottom of the inning as Wilstead doubled, Roper walked and Debry singled. Emery took the lead in the third inning as Ridge walked to lead off the inning and he made his way around the bases and scored when the Dino first baseman made an error on a ball hit by Roper. Carbon tied the score in the top of the fifth inning as Richardson singled and eventually scored on a single by Fossat.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Emery added three runs. Jordan Baletka, batting ninth, walked to get on base and after Ridge got out, Tuttle singled, Wilstead walked and all three scored when Roper doubled.
Emery will host Union in a non-region contest this Wednesday and then will travel to North Sevier to play the Wolves in a region 15 contest on Friday. Emery will host Gunnison on Saturday.
