The Emery Spartans needed a game and the Timpanogos Timberwolves were available so the schedule was set, unfortunately the undersized Spartans suffered a homecoming defeat 35-6.
The Timberwolf quarterback set the stage as he was bigger than anybody in the Spartan lineup at 6’5″ and 225 lbs. The Wolves also had defensive linemen that were listed at 285, 290 and 230 and an offensive lineman listed at 320 lbs.
The Spartans Josh Eden, a sophomore that stands 5’6″ and 140 lbs, received the opening kick-off and returned it 56 yards to the Timpanogos 34 yard line. The Spartans were able to pickup one first down before they turned the ball over on downs. The Timberwolves scored on their first play from scrimmage as Jace Bramell took it 73 yards around the left side for a score.
Three of the Spartans next four series ended with interceptions and the other with a punt before the Spartans scored on their last series of the opening half as they marched 59 yards and scored on a pass from Bowie Jeffs to Isaac Bawden. The Wolves had also added two more touchdowns in the secnd quarter as they intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown and recovered an Emery fumble at the Emery 16 yard line and scored four plays later on a 10-yard pass.
The Spartans had the ball for five series in the secnd half. They punted twice, fumbled twice and turned the ball over on downs once. The Timberwolves scored in the secnd half on a run of 59 yards and a pass of 57 yards.
Head Coach Kevin Reynolds after the ball game said; “We have got to quit killing ourselves, we need to quit making mistakes, we should be over that.” He also added “We knew that they were going to be a lot bigger than us but we underestimated how quick they were going to be. They had a couple of real speedsters.”
The Spartans ran the ball 29 times for 35 yards, 26 of those yards came on a fake punt that Joey Bernard, a junior, took to his right and picked up a first down on the series that they scored. The Spartans were 12 for 36 in passing for 88 yards.
The Spartans are at home this Friday night as they host the North Sanpete Hawks at 7 p.m. The Hawks defeated Lehi last week and Timpanogos earlier in the year.
