The Emery High Spartans hosted the Canyon View Falcons in their second football game of the season and Canyon View used their size well in defeating the Spartans 53-20. Early in the second half, the score was 22-12 for the Falcons but the rest of the game from that point on belonged to Canyon View. Canyon View is probably the favorite to win the 3-A South region this season.
Emery moved the ball in the first half against the Falcons but the first three Emery drives ended by way of turnover, one of those in the Falcon end zone and another inside the 10-yard line.
The other first half drive for Emery ended with a five-yard run by Bryce Dugmore for a touchdown. Emery started the scoring drive at their own 21-yard line and marched down the field in 10 plays to score. A pass from quarterback Zach Jorgensen to receiver TJ Lacock for 21 yards started the drive off. Emery was assisted on the drive by a pass interference call.
Emery received the kickoff to begin the second half and punted after being unsuccessful in gaining a first down. Canyon View’s quarterback fumbled the snap two plays later and Emery’s Logan Labrum recovered at the Canyon View 18-yard line. Dugmore scored again four plays later on a 1-yard run.
Emery’s last score came in the fourth quarter. Emery returned the Falcon kick-off to their 35-yard line and then took nine plays to march down and score. Ashton Dieli scored from six yards out and Easton Gordon ran in the extra point attempt.
Bryce Dugmore ran the ball 17 times for 76 yards and two touchdowns while Austin Allred ran the ball 12 times for 75 yards. Dieli gained 56 yards on 12 carries and Kacey Jones picked up 13 yards on four carries. Logan Cox ran the ball once for 9 yards, Gage Vanburen ran the ball twice for 11 yards and Tel Gardner ran the ball twice for 4 yards.
Zach Jorgensen completed five of 11 passes for 53 yards and threw two interceptions. Lacock caught three of those passes for a total of 35 yards while Kolton Butler caught one for 17 yards and Dugmore caught one for 1 yard.
Emery’s defense came up with two fumbles with the second being recovered by Tristan Tuttle. Tuttle and Dugmore led the team with eight tackles each and Kyler Stilson had seven tackles. Chase Jewkes and Ashton Dieli each had six tackles and Allred had five tackles.
Emery will go on the road this Friday night for their first game away from Castle Dale. They will travel to Delta for another non-region contest. Game time is 7 pm.
