Ferron donates $1,000 to miners memorial

Ferron City council planned the annual Ferron Christmas party for Dec. 7. There will be hot cocoa and treats, a movie and a visit from Santa. It will be held at the Ferron Multi-purpose building at the rodeo grounds beginning at 6 p.m.
Council members were sad to learn the news that city councilman Joe Trenery had suffered a heart attack while in California and will be unable to attend city council meetings during his recovery.
Ferron Mayor Trent Jackson presented a check for $1,000 to the miners memorial for Emery County. LoriAnn Larsen was on hand to accept the check for the miners memorial committee. The plan is to be ready to unveil the monument during the Emery County Fair in June.
Ferron City collected funds for the memorial during their annual Peach Days dinner.
Larsen thanked the city for their donation. She said she is currently doing research to add any miners names that may have been overlooked.
The monument will be of granite stone with bronze plaques. Gary Prazen has designed the miners angel for both the Carbon County and Emery County monuments.
“I have been amazed by the support from the local communities. It was a wonderful idea to collect money at the Ferron dinner. This truly was a donation from the citizens of Ferron. We thank Ferron for their generosity and support,” said Larsen.
Ferron will enter into a backhoe rental/lease agreement with John Deere. The cost is $891 for a year and John Deere will do the maintenance of the backhoe.
The council discussed and approved the new yard sale ordinance. They discussed rental of the park/pavilion for yard sales. They will handle these requests on a case by case basis. There is a rental fee attached to the park and a clean-up fee.
The council discussed hiring an ordinance enforcer. They are looking for someone who knows the ordinances. On a trial basis the enforcer would get $100 a month. One of the most pressing ordinance issues is loose dogs and proper permitting for building.
Ronnie Bloomer, councilman said the council doesn’t have time to follow through on ordinance compliance. He is in favor of finding someone for this position.
Mayor Jackson said they will try to find $600 in the budget so they can get someone hired by January and then address it in the June 2016 budget. For now the money can come from the temporary help budget.
The city will advertise for the position in the Ferron newsletter.
Bloomer said there have been complaints about the dumpster site being messy. The council will get cameras for the dump area to survey the area for non-compliant dumpers. There has also been a problem with dumpster divers almost getting buried with loads of debris.
Mayor Jackson reported the new electrical boxes will be installed to update the poles so Christmas decorations can be put up. Dean Allen will be putting the boxes together. Rocky Mountain Power will connect the new boxes when they are ready.
Mayor Jackson said the county is again addressing the tippage fee at the county landfill. Any increases for the city by the garbage company will need to be passed onto the citizens. The county will continue to look at the issue and Mayor Jackson will keep the council apprised of what’s decided there.
The scarecrow contest was a success and someone from Cedar City driving through requested pictures of the contest to present to their city council to see if they might want to hold a scarecrow contest there.
The city maintenance workers have been blowing out lines and getting ready for winter. They attended a pesticide workshop. They’ve also been working on weeds at Molen Cemetery. The cemetery is open for adoption to any group who would like to keep the cemetery maintained.
The dugouts at the ball field were shingled and next spring work will be completed at the concession stand. The city needs salt for the roads for winter.
The winners for the scarecrow contest were: first place Sherry Ford, second place-Barbara McKell, third place Aspect Foundation. Winners in the finding the missing scarecrow contest were: Kade Perkins, Ambria Migliori, Brayden Tennant, Jesus Cabrera, Nancy Draft and Kathy Kearney Reeves.
