Wrestling team does well in divisionals: Dieli-first

The 2-A high schools all traveled to Richfield and participated in the 2-A Divisional championship meet to decide the entrants in this weeks Utah State 2-A Championship tournament at Utah Valley University. Emery High School did well for the limited number of team members but Emery scored 199 points and placed seventh out of 16 teams. Delta, as expected, won and scored 343 points with South Summit second with 314.50 points. The next four teams were Millard, North Summit, North Sevier and Beaver.
Individually, Ashton Dieli led the way by winning the 160 lb weight Division B title and McKoy Christiansen, last years state champion at 126, finished second as he lost the final match 9-5 after winning his first two matches by a fall and a major decision. Dieli pinned his opponent from Beaver and had a major decision in the semi finals before he won the final match 8-6.
Emery had a total of 16 wrestlers place in the top eight of their respective divisions and should be moving on to the state meet this week. The next best finishes were by Gus Dalton in the 120 pound weight class, Nathan Urie in the 132 class, Justin Jennings in the 138 class and Newt Oveson in the 154 pound weight class as all finished third.
Finishing fourth were Chase Christiansen at 106 pounds and Ty Mecham at 220 pounds. Finishing fifth were McKay Mecceriello at 126 pounds and Aaron Reeve at 285 pound. Finishing sixth were Ty Funk in 138 and Tel Gardner at 145. Finishing seventh were Zac World at 120 pounds and Delan Funk at 170 pounds. Finishing eighth were Lon Huntsman at 145 pounds and Kacey Jones at 170 pounds.
The 2-A state championships will be this Friday and Saturday.
