Pirates down Monument Valley

The Green River High Lady Pirates defeated Monument Valley on the road last week 60-54 and are solidly in second place in region 19 with just two games remaining on the schedule before the state play-offs begin next week at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. Monticello leads the region with a 7-0 record and the Green River team stands at 5-1. The Lady Pirates will travel to Monticello Tuesday night to face the undefeated in region action Monticello team for the second time this year. They will conclude the regular season at home on Friday night as they host Whitehorse High in Green River.
Last week Green River traveled to Monument Valley and built a solid lead over the first three quarters and then hung on in the final period to grab the win.
Green River led 15 after the first quarter and then outscored their opponent 15-8 in the second quarter to lead 30-20 at the half. Green River won the third quarter 16-10 and led after three at 46-30. Monument Valley had a great final period as they won the quarter 24-14 and narrowed the deficit to the final score. Maribel Escalante led the team in scoring as she poured in 19 points and also had 5 rebounds, 1 steal and 3 assists. Savannah Williams added 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds and also had 1 assist and 1 steal. Presley Lovato also scored in double figures with 10 points and had 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Miranda Johnson scored 5 points and had 10 rebounds, Cassidy Bastian scored 4 points and had 5 rebounds and Justice Hatfield also scored 4 points. Prisma Mendez scored 2 points to close out the scoring.
