The Emery County School District held their last meeting of the summer before the school year starts on Aug. 22.
Doug Johnson presented an overview of the new district website. There are many changes to the new website. All schools in the district will have their own web page with a standardized format. Each school will have their own web editor. Parents can look up notes from the school community councils. The school district owns the domain name emeryschools.org. The cost of the website has been greatly reduced from $23,000 a year to $8,000 a year.
Superintendent Larry Davis submitted names for approval, Melinda Bell, bus assistant and Gaylene Erwin, volleyball coach for the Green River middle school team. The names were approved.
The fall activity and sports schedules were presented for approval. Board member Tracey Johnson was concerned about the middle school tournaments being held on Saturday. The issue had been discussed in the school board meeting several months ago. Superintendent Davis would like to meet with the Castle Valley Athletic Association about the scheduling. The schedules were approved.
The board approved the annual notification to the public concerning the asbestos containing materials.
The Emery High football team is selling coupons for a fundraiser. It is expected to raise over $10,000. The funds will be used for equipment and uniforms. The fundraising was approved.
Jared Black gave the business administrator report. He said the two student built houses are on the market and expected to sell.
Superintendent Davis gave his report. He noted the passing of former superintendent Dennis Nelson. He also noted the passing of Jason Stevens, the son of two district employees. The board expressed their condolences to the families.
Superintendent Davis has met with Sheriff Funk and Judge Craig Bunnell concerning the juvenile justice law.
At a superintendent’s conference testing was discussed. The ACT Aspire test will not be used because it does not align with the core standards. SAGE testing will be used again. We know this is not a popular choice, but it is the best option right now.
The Utah State Board of Education voted to do away with some of the requirements for middle school, such as health and art. It will take effect in October. It will be too late to change the scheduling for this school year. The classes can still be offered as an elective.
Opening Institute will be held on Aug. 21. Neal Peacock will be the keynote speaker and there will be breakout sessions and a benefits fair.
The technology committee approved the purchase of a data platform. It can be used to track student progress, create tests, set benchmarks and provide consistent data for grades K-12. It will be funded by the technology grant.
The human sexuality committee will review any curriculum used in health classes. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education and Career and Technical Education pathways committee is making progress.
Superintendent Davis met with Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox at the 25K jobs initiative. He expressed the school district’s need for CTE pathways funding.
