The Emery School District hosted their annual district spelling bee on Feb. 9 at the Emery High Little Theatre. Ralph Worthen from the district office conducted the spelling bee with Diane Carter the pronouncer and Kerry Larsen was a judge for the event.
The spellers started with spelling their names in the practice round. The first round began with words like, trek, waltz, diary, croon, tornado, daily, monsoon, loiter, muskrat, mammoth, womanly, learned, Netherlander, aspen, dreary, ballerina, Capricorn, fiend, nostril, caboose and dearth.
The second round brought sultan, diorama, falsetto, geothermal, crescent, llama, gradient, mathematics, harmonica, stoic, furlong and hypothesis.
In the third round Tyler Stilson spelled ambulance and Grace Bernard spelled contraband, Becca Miller spelled threshold.
In round four Stilson spelled hurricane, Bernard spelled protein and Miller spelled fathom.
In the fifth round Stilson missed the word adios and Bernard missed the word algebra. Miller spelled the word sumo correctly. She then had to spell one more word correctly to be the champion. She then spelled carnivore correctly to win the bee.
This left Bernard and Stilson tied for second and third. So they had a tie breaker round. Stilson spelled the word giraffe correctly and Bernard missed the word anchovy. Stilson then had to spell an additional word correct and he missed the word crochet. This put both he and Bernard back into another round. Bernard missed the word alamo and Stilson spelled hosta correctly. He then had to spell an additional word, conjecture, which he spelled correctly to take second place.
