The 65th annual Southeastern Utah Junior Livestock Show will kick off in Ferron on July 9. According to USU Extension Agent Dennis Worwood, this year’s show promises to be a large and competitive event.
Approximately 50 steers, 250 lambs and 140 hogs have been entered by 4-H and FFA members from throughout the state. “We expect about the same number of steers and lambs as last year, but more hogs,” Worwood commented. “This is by far the most hog entries we have received in my 20 years with the show.”
The hog barn is being expanded to receive the influx of pigs. Show officials expect to have the addition and new pens finished before show time.
Small animals will also be exhibited. A rabbit show will be held at 5 p.m. on July 11. Rabbit show chair Dan James expects exhibitors to learn a great deal from the judge, who is one of the best in the state. A poultry show is scheduled for 5 p.m. on July 10 but may be cancelled because of concerns about Exotic Newcastle Disease. Contact poultry show chair Cody Taylor for information on the poultry show. A livestock judging contest will be held at 10:30 a.m. on July 10. The public is invited to test their livestock judging skills along with 4-H and FFA members. Fitting and Showmanship contests will begin at noon on Thursday, followed by judging of breeding beef and breeding sheep at 3 p.m.
Market animals will be judged on July 11. Market hogs will be shown at 8 a.m., followed by market lambs at 11 a.m. and market steers at 3 p.m. An exhibitors dance will be held at 8:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose building. A buyer’s brunch will be held at the multi-purpose building from 9-10:15 a.m. on July 12. The market animal auction begins at 10:30 a.m., with the sale order being lambs, steers, then hogs. “The Southeastern Utah Junior Livestock Show has the reputation of being a friendly, yet competitive show”, Worwood said. “We welcome the public to come and be part of this Castle Country tradition.
