Last week saw the Emery High Lady Spartans win a barn-burner in Blanding against the San Juan Broncos and then let a game get away from them in the final couple of innings in a non-region contest against South Sevier. Emery defeated San Juan 16-10 and lost to South Sevier 9-4.
In Blanding, both teams scored two runs in the first inning of the game but the Spartans followed up by scoring two in the top of the second inning to lead 4-2. Emery added five more runs in the fourth inning and another run in the fifth inning to lead 10-2. San Juan was held scoreless by the Emery team in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings but the seventh went the Lady Broncos way.
In the bottom of the seventh inning with Emery leading 10-2, San Juan scored eight runs to tie the score at 10-10. Emery, not to be outdone by late inning rallies, then scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning and held San Juan scoreless in the bottom of that inning to win the game 16-10.
Emery scored sixteen runs on nineteen base hits, gathered just two walks but were the recipients of eight errors by the Bronco fielders. Addy Healy and Adri Childs each hit a pair of doubles for the only extra-base hits of the game. Carlie Robinson led the team with four singles in five at-bats. Ambree Bennett, Jayla Weston, Madisyn Alton and Regan Rasmussen each had a pair of singles and Healy, Morgann Donaldson and Childs each had one single.
Bailey Huggard and Braileigh Clark pitched in the game and the two of them combined to give up ten runs, but only five were earned runs, twelve base hits, they walked five batters and they struck out nine batters.
At home on Thursday against South Sevier in a non-region contest, the Rams scored first in the top of the first inning and led 1-0 after one inning. Emery scored twice in the second inning and once in the third inning to lead 3-0 after three innings. The Lady Rams then scored once in the fourth inning, twice in the fifth and sixth innings and three times in the top of the seventh inning to lead 9-3. The Spartans answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning for the game’s final score of 9-4.
The Emery bats gained just seven base hits in the game, all of them singles. Morgann Donaldson and Bailey Huggard each had a pair of singles and Bennett, Alton and Rasmussen each had one. Healy and Robinson each had a base on balls. Huggard pitched for the Spartans.
Emery will face North Sevier twice this week, at home on Tuesday afternoon at the high school fields and then in Salina on Friday afternoon.
