UtahAmerican Energy, Inc. is making technical revisions to its mining application pending before the state, as part of the review process for a permit to tap its Book Cliffs reserves.
Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining last Friday asked for clarification of a number of provisions of the company’s permit application, which was filed and approved for agency review in February.
“We are pleased with the steady progress being made in the review process,” said Clyde Borrell, UtahAmerican’s president. “The division is being thorough in its evaluation, as it should be. A response to the issues addressed by the division in the technical analysis last week will be submitted in a timely manner.”
The division last week asked UtahAmerican to provide additional information and clarification to help with their review of the application. This ongoing dialogue between the applicant and DOGM is routine for approval of any mining permit, or revision to a permit.
UtahAmerican holds six federal coal leases in Horse Canyon and Lila Canyon. Mining rights were purchased by the company in 1999 from the Intermountain Power Agency.
Just over a year ago the federal Bureau of Land Management issued rights-of-way for the Lila Canyon project. UtahAmerican received federal mine approval last November from the United States Department of Interior for the Lila Canyon Mine. This spring, less than a month after DOGM gave UtahAmerican the green light to proceed with its permit application review, the company submitted a lease-by-application to potentially double its coal reserves adjacent to the proposed Lila Canyon Mine.
“We are making a long-term commitment to mining in the state of Utah,” said Borrell.
