The Emery High football team concluded their preseason games last Friday night with a game against Manti on the road. The Templars sent the Spartans to their fourth straight loss as they won the game 35-14. Emery had also lost to Payson the week before by the score of 17-0 in a game in Castle Dale.
Emery scored first in the Manti game as they scored on their third possession of the game on a 53-yard run by running back Rance Jensen.
The scoring play was the second play of a 78 yard drive with the first play being a pass play from Kyson Stilson to Easton Gordon that covered 25 yards. Emery led 7-0 after the first quarter.
The second period was all Manti though as the Templars scored three times and led 21-7 at the half. Manti added another touchdown in the third quarter and then both teams scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter of play. Emery’s second touchdown came on Emery’s final possession of the game as quarterback Kyson Stilson connected with back Easton Gordon on a pass play that covered 84 yards. Jensen was the leading rusher in the game as he gained 108 yards on 19 carries. Stilson completed nine passes in 25 attempts and those passes gained 177 yards. Stilson had one touchdown completion and threw one interception. Emery also lost one fumble. Gordon caught three passes for 119 yards. Colton Willson caught two passes for 17 yards. Jaymes Bowman caught two passes for 7 yards. Jensen caught one pass for 29 yards and Jared Snow caught one pass for 6 yards.
Defensively, Emery was led in tackles by Gordon, Willson and Snow who all finished with eight tackles. Jesse Barnett and Bowman each had 6 tackles and Jensen and Lon Huntsman each had 5 tackles. Bowman finished the game with two interceptions. Emery will now continue play in 3-A North action and will be at home the next three weeks as they will start off the home-stand with a game against Judge Memorial Catholic High School. Emery will then face Carbon the following week in the Spartan homecoming game and then will conclude the home-stand with a game against Morgan on September 29.
