After the Emery High Lady Spartan basketball team defeated Union High last week by the score of 85-47 on Tuesday night in Castle Dale, their fourth straight win to open the 2017-18 basketball season by double digit scoring, the Emery team traveled to Beaver and had to hang on for the win on Thursday night by the score of 52-49.
At Beaver, Emery started off the game like normal as they outscored the Lady Beavers 21-12 in the first quarter of action. Emery then won the second quarter 13-7 and led at the half by 15 points 34-19 as things seemed to be on track for another double digit win.
The third quarter did not go the Spartans way as they got outscored 21-6 in the quarter, the first time this season that they got handled by an opponent, and the score was tied at the end of the third quarter of play 40-40. Emery won the final period 12-9 to grab the win and avoid the upset. Megan Jensen led the way for Emery against Beaver with 18 points and she also had 9 rebounds. Lainee Jensen scored 14 points and she had 3 rebounds while Kacelyn Toomer finished with 11 points and also 3 rebounds. Kinlee Toomer scored 8 points and Kinlee added 3 assists. Bailey Huggard had the final point of the game and Bailey also had 6 rebounds.
Against Union, Megan scored 21 points, had 5 rebounds and also had 3 steals. Kacelyn scored 20 points, had 5 assists and also had 3 steals. Bailey finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lainee Jensen had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in her complete game and Kinlee ended up with 4 points, 9 assists and 4 rebounds. Off the bench Morgan Hurdsman scored 8 points followed by Tayden Nielson and Ambree Bennett with 3 points each and Makieya Bertuzzi and Brileigh Curtis with 2 points each.
Emery will face South Summit at home on Thursday night and then will travel to Springville, a 5-A school, on Friday night to close out the pre-holiday schedule.
It was a good week for the Emery High boys’ basketball team as they shot the three-ball often and accurately in the two games that they played. On Wednesday night Emery hosted the Carbon Dinos and they sank 18 three-pointers, two off the state record is what I have heard, on their way to a 93-53 victory. On Friday the Spartans hosted Maeser Prep out of Lindon and the game was a repeat, the Spartans made 17 three-point shots as they defeated the Lions 96-53.
The Emery fans were treated to a pair of wins that were both convincing and fun to watch. Without official stats at hand, the three-point shots had to be falling at around a 50 percent rate, which is pretty good shooting.
Both ball games were essentially over after the first quarter of play. Emery led the Dinos 32-7 at the end of the period and they led the Lions 25-8 at that same point in the game. At the half the scores were 47-14 for the Spartans over the Dinos and 51-18 for Emery over the Lions. Emery had made 10 three-pointers in the Maeser game by the end of the first half and they had made eight in that same time frame against Carbon.
In the Carbon game, Tyler Butler led the way with six three’s with Brax Jensen and Easton Gordon each making four. Cade Brazier made three and Kyson Stilson had one to total 18. Against Maeser, Brazier led the way with six three’s and Stilson was right behind with five. Butler made four and Kyler Wilstead, subbing for an injured Gordon in this game, made the final pair of three-point shots.
Against Carbon, Butler ended the game with 21 points and 5 rebounds. Gordon finished with 19 points and Stilson ended the game with 17 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds. Jensen also ended the game in double figures with 15 points and Brazier scored 9 points, had 8 assists and also grabbed 8 rebounds.
Also scoring in the game were Alex Orozco with 4 points and Wilstead, Rance Jensen, Justin Rasmussen and Mason Faimalo with 2 points each.
Against the Lions from Maeser Prep, Stilson led the way with 30 points as he scored 11 in the first quarter, 8 in the second and 11 points in the third period. Brazier scored 20, Butler scored 19 and Wilstead scored 11 points as again four Spartans ended up in double figures. Jensen scored 6 points, Orozco scored 5 points, Brodie Tuttle scored 3 points and Rasmussen scored 2 points.
Emery will play just a single game this week as South Summit will come to town this Friday.
