Emery Town swears in new council member

The town of Emery called to order the Public Hearing Meeting on June 14. Mayor Mistie Christiansen presided over the meeting. This was the first held public hearing for the budget amendments for fiscal year of 2017 and the budget for fiscal year 2018. Questions and deliberations were brought forward and answered by the councilmembers and the mayor. A motion was passed to amend the current year budget.
Next year’s budget was kept in balance. A roll call approval on the budget was unanimously approved by all three council members, Jesse Allan, Corinne Dalton and Varian Allen. The public had no questions about the budget and the Public Hearing was adjourned.
Mayor Christiansen called to order the Emery Town Council Meeting. The minutes from the May 2017 town council meeting were approved followed by a motion to approve the open invoices for payment. The next item on the agenda was a motion to approve Jesse Allan to a supervisory position over maintenance duties.
KP Catering approached the council for approval on a new business license. A motion to support and approve the license was granted. A roll call approval was then given to purchase a new flag pole for the park. The meeting continued with an open council member position, where applications were reviewed and a vote was rendered. ShaLane Christiansen received an unanimous vote and was sworn into the vacant councilmember position.
Discussion continued with regards to the Pioneer Day Celebration which will be held on July 20-July 22. The theme will be “In Their Shoes.” A fitness program contest will begin July 1 and run through July 22. The person who takes the most steps will be given a prize. The celebration activities will begin on Thursday, July 20, with a Softball game starting at 7. Activities for Saturday will start at 7 am with the parade at 10 am. Wayne and Carrie Luke will be the honored citizens who will ride in the parade. KP Catering will give a written proposal to provide dinner on the night of July 22. The meeting progressed with Councilman Varian Allen reporting on the Castle Valley Service District plans to re-bid proposals on streets and gutters.
The beautification committee has completed their assignments on planters and the children from Emery library story time decorated two of the planters. Councilman Allan reported on planning and zoning a new T-Mobile tower.
Discussion was then turned to the Utah Enterprise Zone Application which gives tax breaks to businesses. This application will need to be completed by each town and filed by the end of the year. The next Town Council meeting will be held Tuesday, July 11.
