RP’s Family Diner
Robert Pahl, operator of RP’s Family Diner in Huntington, (formerly DeJaVu), while not formally trained as a chef, has 18 years experience in managing restaurants in several big hotel chains, such as Marriott, Sheraton, Shiloh Inns, Clarion and Holiday Inns. He also worked at Snowbird Ski Resort for 10 years.
Following his stint in the US Army, RP went to work for his grandfather in Walla Walla, Wash. His grandfather ran Sarge’s Diner where everything was made from scratch everyday. His grandfather told RP that he had a “knack” for cooking and should pursue it as a career. When his grandfather passed away, and his grandmother sold the restaurant, RP did just that.
Robert has been a sous chef, a banquet chef, a garmiche chef and has been the manager in all the restaurants where he has worked. He is very customer and community oriented. “Every chef’s dream is to have his own restaurant. My mother, who lives here in Huntington, told me about the building becoming available and asked me if I was interested. Not only was I extremely interested, but several of my colleagues were too. They came with me and are working here also. Kristy Pahl, RP’s wife, is the pastry chef and she has 11 years experience. James Crider is the kitchen supervisor.
“This is country cooking with a big city flair,” said RP. “Not only is the food great, but the atmosphere is fun. Most of the menu items are named for local landmarks and people. Every Friday and Saturday, we have prime rib and every weekday, we have a soup de jour. We also have vegetarian and low carb selections.”
RP’s will do catering and the restaurant is equipped to host banquets and company parties. The pastry chef will also do wedding cakes.
RP’s hours are 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday through Saturday, they are open 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Breakfast is served all day. They all take Sunday off to enjoy the desert. Phone 687-CHEF.
