Dean was born Oct. 18, 1927 in Price, Utah to Melroy Ole (Roy) and Clarissa Elizabeth Jones Nelson. He joined the Navy at age 16 1/2, where he entered the Merchant Marines then the Navy as a Seaman at age 19. While in the Navy one of his duties found him in special weapons as a nuclear technician. He retired from the Navy after 20 years as a Master Chief Electronic Technician. Before returning to Price, Utah, Dean was a civilian on an observation ship called the Flip off of Hawaii for one year.
He met Carleen Scholin in northern California and they were married on Aug. 1, 1953 in Nevada. While stationed in Albuquerque they were blessed with their first born son, Dean Roy. A daughter, Linda Louise and son, Michael Carlo were born in California while they were stationed there. After his retirement from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1966, the family returned to Price.
Dean then worked as a TV Repairman then a Postman. He went back to college, got his degree then taught electronics and hydraulics at CEU. He was offered a position with Peabody Coal teaching safety. That job took him again out of state to Arizona. He retired from Peabody Coal as head of the Training Department and him and his wife then returned to Price to enjoy their retirement. Their children, grand children and great grand children are a big part of their lives.
