The 2017 3-A football regular season ended last Friday night and the first round of the play-offs is set to begin this Thursday at the home of the high school with the higher seed.  Last Friday Emery lost at Grantsville by the score of 21-13 after leading into the third quarter of the game.  In the Spartan region, Morgan defeated Union 51-22 and Judge edged Carbon 21-18.
In the 3-A South region, Richfield defeated Manti 30-10 and the Spartans will face the winner of this game, Juab defeated North Sanpete 33-7 and in the upset Summit Academy defeated Juan Diego 51-49.  Juan Diego had been ranked number one up to this game and they finished tied with Juab and Summit Academy for the region title.  Juan Diego lost the coin flip and received the third place seeding in that region and will now face the Carbon Dinos.
Emery will travel to Richfield this Thursday for a game scheduled to start at 4 pm unless the two schools both agree to change the time.
North Sanpete will play at Union, Manti will play at Judge and Carbon at Juan Diego in this weeks games.  Morgan, Grantsville, Summit Academy and Juab will have a bye this week and will wait for a game winner from this weeks games.
Last Friday night in Grantsville, the Emery Spartans were the only team to score in the first half of the game.  After neither team scored in the first quarter, Emery on their third series of the night, started a drive at their 32-yard line and marched 68 yards in 12 plays to score on a 9-yard pass play from Kyson Stilson to Jared Snow.
Brock Winter kicked the extra point and the Spartans led 7-0.  The big plays of the drive were pass plays from Stilson to Colton Willson for 15 yards  and two pass plays to Easton Gordon that covered 14 and 8 yards.
Grantsville then scored twice in the third quarter to lead 14-7 after three periods of play. In the fourth quarter, Emery started a drive at their 40-yard line and then put together a six-play 60-yard drive that ended  with a 13-yard run by back Rance Jensen.
The two-point conversion attempt was no good and Grantsville still led 14-13.
Grantsville added a fourth quarter touchdown to get to the final score of 21-13.  Emery had the ball for two series in the final period but those two drives ended with the Spartans going for a first down on a fourth down play and coming up unsuccessful and with a Spartan fumble.
Offensively, Stilson finished the night at quarterback by going 10 for 16 and those ten passes covered 102 yards.
Stilson carried the ball three times and lost 11yards on those carries. Jensen rushed the ball 15 times for 46 yards and a touchdown, Gordon carried the ball three times for 14 yards, Snow carried the ball once for 11 yards and Jaymes Bowman carried the ball twice for 7 yards.
Bowman also caught one pass for 14 yards, Willson caught three passes for 31 yards, Gordon caught three passes for 23 yards, Snow caught two passes for 29 yards and Jensen caught one pass for 5 yards.
Defensively, Drake Hoffman had 10 tackles to lead the team with Lon Huntsman, Teigan Christman and Jensen each recording 8 tackles, AC Reeve recording 7 tackles and Willson, Landon Fairbanks and Gordon each recording 6 tackles.  Jensen had an interception in the game.
