Emery Spartan basketball loses heart breaker to South Summit

Last Friday and Saturday, 16 3-A girls’ basketball teams and 16 boys’ basketball teams went to Wasatch High School in Heber City to play in the first round of the 3-A playoffs with just a single goal in mind, win. Teams that won continue play this week in St George at the Dixie State basketball facility on Thursday and teams that lost look forward to next year. Both of the Emery High teams went but only the girls will make the trip to St George to continue the quest for a state championship. The Lady Spartans defeated Providence Hall Friday night by the score of 86-24 and then the Emery boys lost a tough one to South Summit by the score of 80-74.
The Emery boys trailed after the first quarter 18-13 but led at the half 33-31. They then trailed after three periods at 55-51 and lost the game by six points. Emery made 23 shots out of 50 attempts for 46 percent but South Summit made 26 out of 50 shots for 52 percent. Emery’s down fall was the fact that they made just three of 16 shots from behind the three-point line for 18 percent shooting. Emery shot free throws really well as they made 25 of 30 shots. Emery had just four assists compared to South Summit with 18, Emery had 18 turnovers compared to just 13 for the Wildcats, Emery had five blocked shots compared to none and both teams had seven steals.
Kyson Stilson finished with 29 points, 4 rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot and he made nine of 14 shots and all 10 of his free throws. Brax Jensen scored 16 points, Easton Gordon 14 points and Cade Brazier 10 points as four Spartans finished the game in double figure scoring. Easton had 7 rebounds and an assist and a blocked shot. Cade had 5 rebounds and 3 steals and Brax had 4 rebounds, 3 steals and an assist along with a blocked shot. Emery’s other points were scored by Tyler Butler with 4 points and Kyler Wilstead with 1 point.
