Jessie Etzel
PRICE-Jessie Lee Etzel died peacefully at her home Jan. 11, 2004 at the age of 71.
She was born Dec. 21, 1932 to Glen and Amy Crawford Nelson.
She grew up in Helper during World War II and dearly loved “the jungle” along the Price River. As a precocious child she orchestrated war drives for metal, oils and other scarce commodities. Jessie Lee left her childhood home in Helper to attend high school at Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant. She forever cherished and often recanted her memories of the years spent at Wasatch.
Returning to Price at age 16, Jessie Lee attended Carbon College where she met the only love of her life, Al Etzel. Following her graduation at age 18, Jessie and Alfred were married Oct. 7, 1951. Together they shepherded their children through childhood, college and beyond. They were only separated by his premature death in 2001.
She was a member of the Price chapter of PEO and a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. Jessie shared her love of reading, world history and animals with her children, Alene, Glenn and Amy. She loved her 10 grandchildren beyond measure. She was admittedly somewhat of an anachronism in a world that had long ago moved on.
She is survived by three children; their families; and her beloved sister, Glennie Mate.
A memorial service was held Jan. 17 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, in Price. In lieu of flowers, Jessie Lee’s family suggests you read a book to a child, adopt a pet, or make a contribution to your favorite charity.
Hazel B. Cowley
PRICE-Hazel Baker Redford Cowley, age 84, completed her journey here on earth and returned to her heavenly home Jan. 15, 2004, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Feb. 6, 1919 in Myton to John Phillip and Philena Gibson Baker. She married John Robert Redford Aug. 22, 1938. After his passing in 1942, she married Vaughn L. Cowley, Aug. 28, 1945 in Salt Lake City. He also preceded her in death in 1970.
She was a member of the LDS Church where she served in numerous callings. She enjoyed very much her association with her dear friends in the Special Interest Group where she served as secretary. Her love of knowledge helped her become a proliferous reader. Her most profound love was her family with whom she spent countless happy hours, supporting them in all they did.
Hazel is survived by her children: Ralph and Georgina Redford of Aurora, Ill., Roberta and Parl Stevenson of Boneta, Warren and Lee Cowley of Austin, Texas, Peggy White of Wellington, Ted Cowley of Price, Jeff and Tonya Cowley of Cleveland, and Duaine and Amy Cowley of Boulder City, Nev.; 13 granchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother Phillip Baker and sisters Alice Olsen and Mildred Buie. In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by son Danny, son-in-law Rulon White, one brother and three sisters.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. in the Price Sixth Ward LDS chapel, 300 west and 500 South. Friends called Sunday evening at Fausett Mortuary in Price. Burial was in the Price City Cemetery.
Glen Larsen Oman Sr.
Glen Larsen Oman Sr. was called home on Jan. 16, 2004 where he will spend his 69th birthday with his mother and father (Mary Dorothea Larsen and Albert Vernon Oman) and other beloved family members who preceded him in death. He was born on Jan. 17, 1935 in Moroni and spent his early years in Castle Dale. He married Leora Guymon on June 11, 1959. He retired from the Army and went to work for the US Postal Service.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lehi Utah Stake Center, 200 North Center, Lehi. Friends may call Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the same location, and at the church on Saturday one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Lehi Cemetery.
Glen Long
EMERY-Glen Martin Long, age 84, passed away Jan. 13, 2004 from complications of pneumonia at the Gunnison Valley Hospital.
He was born in a little cabin in Oskaloosa, Iowa on May 15, 1919 to Joe and Erma White Long. On Jan. 17, 1977, he married Rosalie Dunning in Pioche, Nev.
At the age of 16 he was baptized Methodist in Muchicanick Creek, Iowa. He served 17 years on the L.A. Police Department in Narcotics. Glen owned Ace Garage in Rosemead, Calif. and was a number one mechanic in the State of California for over 25 years. He learned young and cut his teeth on Model T’s. Glen owned a Chevrolet dealership in Beaver for three years and especially liked being his own boss. He worked on many celebrity’s automobiles and knew several personally. Glen and his friend Everett Chadwick started the Independent Garage Owners (IGO) in Sacramento, Calif.
During World War II, Glen was a walnut log buyer in several Midwest states. He loved being with family, children, and animals. He loved to laugh and made people know that it feels good to laugh. He was fair and honest in his beliefs and dealings and he expected to be treated that way in return.
Survived by wife, Rosalie G. Long, Emery; sons, Jim Lee Long, California; Jerry Long, Price; four daughters, Barbara Ann Mitchell, Illinois; Betty Louise Veenstra, Iowa; Donna and Glenna Thompson of California; as well as four stepchildren; three sisters, Clara Merriott, California; Nellie James of Oklahoma; Liz of California; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral service was held Jan. 17 at the Emery LDS Ward Building. Interment, Emery City Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Donna Jean Thomas
HELPER-On Jan. 13, 2004, Donna Jean Thomas was welcomed home with open arms and the words “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” Today she is enjoying a long anticipated reunion with her beloved mother and sister. Donna began her sojourn on this earth in Consumers on June 6, 1930, the first child of Nick and Fern Stevenson Thomas. Donna was raised, educated and spent most of her life in Carbon County. Many have said of her, “The world is a better place because of her and the world would be an even better place if there were more people like her.”
As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she spent her life in service to her Savior by fulfilling a mission to Hong Kong and in many capacities in her wards and stakes and by serving her family, her friends and her fellow man.
She is survived by her father, brothers Bob (Dolores), Houston, Texas, Mike, Spring Glen, and sister Saundra (Jim) Cochrane, Herriman; many nieces and nephews whom she loved as much as if they were her own and many other beloved relatives.
Viewing was held Sat. Jan. 17 at the Helper Stake Center. Services followed with interment in the Price City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Nikki Flemetakis
WALDORF, MD-Nikki Rae Oswald Flemetakis, age 49, passed away Jan. 6, 2004 after a long battle with MS and diabetes in Waldorf.
Born Aug. 31, 1954 in North Hollywood, Calif. to Nick and Ila Rae Leavitt Flemetakis.
Nikki will be dearly missed by all.
Survived by her daughter, April Oswald, Waldorf, Md; mother, Ila Rae O’Brien, Elmo; two brothers, Bill (Gloria) Flemetakis, Kenilworth; Steven Jay (Sandy) Flemetakis, Las Vegas, Nev.; step mother, Bobbie Flemetakis, Las Vegas, Nev.; many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her father, Nick Flemetakis and brother Dave Flemetakis.
Graveside service, Sat. Jan. 24, 2004, 10 a.m. Cliffview Cemetery. Under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Eva Perry
EAST CARBON-Evialena Peterson Fisher Perry, age 86, passed away Jan. 14, 2004 in Price.
Born July 16, 1917 in Sunnyside to Alma and Lena Olsen Peterson.
Married Curtis Herman Fisher Sept. 28, 1936 in Price. He died Oct. 10, 1979. Married Marvin Perry, May 23, 1990 in Provo. Marriage later solemnized in the Provo LDS Temple. Member of the LDS Church.
Eva loved Indian artifacts, collecting antique bottles, and gardening. She was a wonderful grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family and a community of friends.
Survived by husband, Marvin Perry, Price; son, Clent (Barbara) Fisher, East Carbon; two daughters, Allena (Michael) Hyatt; Medina, Wash.; Linda (Rex) Hanberg, Sandy; sister, Lourine Miller, Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents, four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were held Jan. 17 at Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
Allen Price
PRICE-Our beloved father Allen Price, 87, passed away Jan. 10, 2004, at home (Heirloom Inn) in Price. He was born Aug. 10, 1916, in Ferron to William Henry and Lydia Jane Metcalf Price.
Allen was a true cowboy who enjoyed farming, ranching, hunting and breaking horses. He worked for Kaiser Steel Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA Local 9958 for over 40 years. He was one of the original members of the Grassy Trail Riding Club in Sunnyside.
He married Zelda A. Peterson, later deceased, they had one daughter, Geraldine. He then married Oma McBroom, Nov. 1, 1941 (pictured). They had six children, Vivian, Larry, Jerry, Regina, Richard and Gayla. Oma passed away Sept. 23, 1987. He then married Sibyl Timothy, March 19, 1989, he inherited six more children, Molly, Dixie, Bob, Sandra, Holly and Judy. Sibyl passed away June 5, 2003. He was a member of the LDS Church.
Allen is survived by his children: Geraldine (Larry) Olsen of Manti; Vivian (Chester) Housekeeper, Larry Price, Jerry (Frances) Price, Regina (Tom) McCourt, Richard (Kathy) Price, Gayla (Rick) Housekeeper, all of Carbon County; Molly Wood, Oregon; Dixie (Leon) Thayne of Price; Bob (Shirley) Wilstead, St. George; Sandra (Dean) Holdaway, Holly (Delon) Larsen both of Salt Lake City; and Judy (Jim) Noyes of Price. Also survived by 51 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, sister Dora Fautin of Lindon, brothers Owen Price of Orangeville and Daniel (Maxine) Price of Wellington. Preceded in death by his parents, his wives, two son-in-laws, Robert Bachelder and Ronald Leonard, granddaughter Judy Lynn Pearson, three sisters and three brothers.
A viewing was held Jan. 13 at Fausett Mortuary in Price. Graveside services followed at at the Price City Cemetery.
Flavio Eugene Herrera
Flavio Eugene “Gene” Herrera, age 42, passed away Jan. 12, 2004 in Tempe, Ariz. He was born Jan. 21, 1961 in Hiawatha to Flavio and Sarah Martinez Herrera. He was a graduate of both Carbon High School and College of Eastern Utah. He was a free spirit. He enjoyed riding mountain bikes, telling jokes (got time for a quick joke?), meeting new people and photography. He was an excellent mechanic.
Survived by sons, Joshua (Short Pants) and Matthew Brewster and their mother, Traci Smith, Park City. Also survived by loving companion Paula Bruso, Tempe, Ariz. Other survivors include father Flavio Herrera (Stella Montoya) and siblings Josie Espinoza (Steve Yamaguchi), Terrie Tweddell (Lee), Ernie (Kamille), David (Melissa) and Toni Thayne (Bill), all of Price, and brother Tom(Tammy), Port Orchard, Wash. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and other special family members including his godparents, Ernaldo and Esther Herrera, Magna, as well as many friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Martinez Herrera, and siblings Jose Roy, Mary Helen, Mary Linda and Joseph Herrera, as well as maternal and paternal grandparents.
Fly brother, be free. We will miss you.
Memorial mass, Thursday, Jan. 22 at 11:30 a.m. at the Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church. Family will be at the church Thursday at 10 a.m. Committal service, Price City Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Irma Christiansen Box
Irma Christiansen Box, age 93, returned home to her Heavenly Father Jan. 16, 2004 in Ferron. She was born Nov. 6, 1910 in Emery to John J. and Mary Kirstene Jorgensen Christiansen. She married Varian Arnold Box, Feb. 11, 1931 in Salt Lake City, later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.
She was a wonderful, loving mother and friend, sharing her many talents with everyone. She loved to sew, crochet and quilt, making and giving many of her creations to loved ones. She was also an excellent cook and always had pies, cakes, sweet rolls or cookies to share.
She was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in ward and stake leadership responsibilities. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
For several years she and her husband owned and operated the Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Cedar City where she supervised the nursing and cooking staff.
Irma enjoyed her family, friends and many grandchildren. She was proud of her heritage and family reunions were very important to her.
Irma is survived by her daughters: Joyce and Orvel Allen of Emery, JoAnn Behling of Ferron, “Mary” and Gary Jenkins of Oregon, and Connie Morgan of Montana; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren. Also survived by brothers: Vernon and Merlin Christiansen and sisters: Delma Leslie and Euphemia Case.
She was preceded in death by her husband Varian, son-in-law Dean Behling and brothers Rellus and Richard Christiansen.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, at Noon in the old Ferron LDS Chapel. Friends may call Wed. evening from 6-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Ferron City Cemetery.
Maquette Hill
PRICE-Our loving daughter, granddaugther, sister, niece, cousin and aunt, Maquette Nichole Hill, age 19, passed away Jan. 15, 2004 from injuries received in an auto accident in Elko, Nev. She was born Jan. 13, 1985 in Price to John Hill and Susan Nichols.
Maquette was a very outgoing and compassionate person. She enjoyed dancing at Linda Johnston’s School of Dance for 11 years. She volunteered at Castle Country Care Center, where she was later employed as activity coordinator. She loved being outdoors and camping with her family and friends. Maquette always loved playing with and taking care of younger children. Her goal was to go to college and become a physicians assistant, but her goal was cut short. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
Survived by her parents, Susan and Randy Perri, Spring Glen; John Hill, New Jersey; brothers, Cody Newman, Spring Glen; Garrett Newman, Price; Alec Hill, New Jersey; sisters, Charlotte (John) Stickney, Stephanie (Jared) Hubberd, both of Salt Lake City; Haze Newman, Price; grandparents, Fred Nichols, Price; Irene Perri, Spring Glen; aunt, Irene (Randy) Everett, uncle, Dennis (Dixie) Nichols, both of Price; aunt, Darla Huffman, Oregon; 14 first cousins, seven second cousins, two nephews, one niece and a very special cousin, Tiffany Camberlango of Phoeniz, Ariz.
Preceded in death by grandparents, Geraldine Nichols, Angelo Perri, Sr., and aunt, Peggy Cripps.

Ernest F. Felice
PRICE-Ernest F. Felice, age 82, passed away Jan. 16, 2004 in Price.
Born Mar. 18, 1921 in Helper to Frank and Elizabeth Siletta Felice.
Ernest was a graduate of Carbon High School and Carbon College. Served in US Army Air Corps, M/Sgt. Graduate of Boeing School of Aeronautics. Educated at UCLA, University of Tennessee and University of Utah. Long time employee of Litton Industries (Litton Guidance and Control Systems) with assignments in Beverly Hills, Woodland Hills, and Canoga Park, Calif. Joined Electronic Memories and Magnetics in West Jordan. Worked abroad in Hong Kong, Singapore and Belgium. Owner of O’Laughlins Electronic Supply in Salt Lake City. He retired in 1984. Ernest was a member of the Catholic Church.
Survived by two sisters, Matilda (Til) Davido, Price; Stella Gigliotti, Helper; two brothers, Rudy Felice, Price; Frank (Margaret) Marrelli, Helper; sister-in-law, Molly Marrelli; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Guiseppie Marrelli; brother, Chuck Marrelli; brother-in-law, Oscar Davido; Alane Davido; baby sister, Corinda; sister-in-law, Jennie Felice.

Alice Olsen
ORANGEVILLE/PRICE-Alice Elizabeth Baker Olsen, age 90, returned to her Heavenly Father on Jan. 16, 2004 at Castleview Hospital in Price.
She was born April 26, 1913 in Little Sioux, Iowa to John Phillip and Philena Gibson Baker. Married Nyle V. Olsen, Sept. 21, 1933 in Elmo. They were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple on June 2, 1955. He preceded her in death on March 23, 1977.
Alice was an active and very devoted member of the LDS Church. She served in various callings in her wards and also served a temple mission for the Provo and Manti LDS Temples. She enjoyed working outside in her yard and together Nyle and Alice cultivated a farm in Cleveland. For the past year, she has resided at the Heirloom Inn in Price. Alice was a very loving and kind person, who had a great love for children. Her son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the highlight of her life.
She is survived by her son Brent Olsen, Westford, Vt; granddaughter, Crystal McCray, Fletcher, Vt; grandson, Josh Nielsen, Northfield, Vt; great-grandson, Kace Nielsen, Northfield, Vt; great-grandson, Jeremy Farr, Fletcher, Vt; brother, Phillip (Pat) Baker, Grantsville; sister, Mildred (Tom) Buie, West Valley; and special nieces, Roberta and Brenda. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Ben Baker; sisters, Eleanor Baker, Edith Larsen, Myrle Fausett and Hazel Cowley.
Funeral service Jan. 20, at 11 a.m., Orangeville LDS Ward Chapel, located at 45 West 100 South. Family will be at the church one hour prior to service. Interment, Ferron City Cemetery, under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
