A cow moose and her young calf were spotted in Huntington Canyon below the Forks of Huntington Campground. They crossed SR-31 and were then scared by a truck and crossed back again and were feeding along Huntington Creek.
According to Bill Bates from the Division of Wildlife Resources there have been two transplants of moose to the Manti-LaSal forest. The first occurred in the 1970s when 20 animals were moved to the canyon. These moose were killed by poachers. During the 1980s another transplant was tried when 100 animals were moved to the southend of Black Dragon, south of Joe’s Valley. Many of these animals disappeared and some wandered off and some died of natural causes. These moose were brought into the area from northern Utah along the Wasatch Front including Parley’s Canyon and Chalk Creek.
When the elk herd was counted earlier this year, the division observed seven moose. “There are probably 20 or so still hanging on,” said Bates. The moose are spotted from time to time in Huntington Canyon and on the Scofield side of the mountain.
