Green River boys/girls basketball update

The Green River Lady Pirates traveled to Wayne on Jan. 4 for their first region 19 contest. The Lady Pirates lost the game 74-44. The ladies had a difficult time scoring in the first and third quarters, this really hurt the team as they struggled to score points.
Maribel Escalante had a 4 percent shooting average from the field. Maribel Escalante finished the game with 8 points. Talynn Lovato had a very good game, she scored 17 points. Daniela Mendez scored 11 points. Also scoring for the Lady Pirates were Miranda Johnson with 5 points, Morgan Bastian with 2 points and Prisma Mendez with 1 point.
The Lady Pirates traveled to Price to take on the Pinnacle Panthers. The Lady Pirates won this game 55-38. The ladies improved their shooting greatly with a 30 percent average. Maribel Escalante scored 21 points to lead the team, Johnson scored 8 points, Lovato scored 9 points, Daniela Mendez scored 10 points, Alondra Escalante scored 4 points and Prisma Mendez scored 3 points.
The Lady Pirates hosted a home game against Monticello on Jan. 9. They lost to their long time rival 50-46. It was a close game and at half time the ladies were ahead 26-16. Monticello rallied in the third quarter and scored 20 points. Green River was up by one point going into the fourth quarter. In the final quarter Monticello scored 14 points and Green River scored 9 as Green River came up just short of the win. The leading scorer in the game was Daniela Mendez with 18 points. Lovato scored 11 points, Maribel Escalante scored 8 points, Johnson scored 4 points, Prisma Mendez scored 5 points. The girls will host Monument Valley on Jan. 19.
The Green River boys traveled to Price with the girls to take on the Pinnacle Panthers. The boys won the game 65-60. Axel Anguiano led the team with 22 points. Dawson Anderson scored 12 points, Rad Hughes scored 6 points, Sam Corrigan scored 5 points, Trey Vetere scored 14 points and Virgilio Mendoza scored 6 points.
On Jan. 9, the boys traveled to Gunnison Valley to take on the Bulldogs in a non region game. The boys lost this game 80-43. Trey Vetere led the team with 24 points with half of his points coming from 3 point shots. Anguiano scored 6 points, Anderson scored 4 points, Corrigan scored 7 points.  
The boys played another non region game against Altamont and lost the game 80-62. Anderson led the team with 16 points. Anguiano scored 4 points, Kole Hunt scored 2 points, Manuela Rivera scored 8 points, Rad Hughes scored 7 points, Corrigan scored 6 points, Vetere scored 14 points and Mendoza scored 5 points.
The boys will host Monticello on Jan. 16. They will also host Monument Valley on Jan. 19.
