The promising basketball season for the young Lady Pirates came to an abrupt end at the Region 16 tournament at Emery High School in Castle Dale last week. On Thursday, Green River lost to Manila High School 58-50 and then lost to Altamont 43-36 to end their season.
Against Manila, Green River took the early lead before seeing the game slip away from them in the second half. The Pirates led after the first quarter 12-10 and then increased the lead in the second period to lead at the half 28-21.
The Mustangs then outscored Green River in each of the next quarters to claim the win. They outscored the Pirates 17-10 in the third quarter and 20-12 in the final quarter.
Green River scorers were Ciji Vetere with 15 points, Adriana Cordova with 9 points, Whitney Bigelow with 8 points, Charley Vetere, Heidi Vetere and McKenzie Spadafora with 4 points each and Leah Swalberg and Andrea Thornton-Silliman with a point each.
Green River got off to a slow start against Altamont and just could never catch up to snatch a must win victory to stay alive.
Altamont outscored Green River 12-4 in the opening quarter and 9-8 in the second quarter to lead at the half 21-12. Green River won the third period by 4 points but were outscored by 2 points in the fourth quarter to see their state playoff hopes slip away.
Heidi Vetere was the leading scorer with 14 points. Cordova scored 6 points, Ciji Vetere and Bigelow scored 5 each, Charley Vetere scored 4 points and Spadafora scored 2 points.
The Pirates finish the season with a 13-6 record and 4-4 in region play.
