It is with great sadness that the Emery County Progress bids farewell to Harriet’s World. Our friend and columnist, Harriet Ruth Brandon Bishop passed away this week. We have enjoyed our association with her.
Her column was a welcome addition to the Commentary Page of our newspaper. During the time that she wrote Harriet’s World, she tackled many of the ordinary situations in life with extraordinary insight.
In the newspaper world, there is a contest for writing and photography which is held every year. In 2003, Harriet’s first full year with us, we entered her column in the Best Feature Column category. She won third place among all the weekly newspapers in Utah. She had a refreshing outlook on life and the everyday events, and that outlook was appreciated.
Writing, as an expression of oneself, is a difficult thing to accomplish. Harriet relished the chance to overcome and excel at doing just that. We will miss her approach to life. Thank you Harriet for what you have given us.
