It was primary election day in Emery County on June 26 where 1,816 voters throughout the county cast ballots. Voter turnout was 59.50 percent.
On July 3 the election machines were checked at 11 a.m.and the votes were canvassed at noon.
The canvass is a record of all votes recorded. On election night the provisional and mail-in ballots aren’t included in the totals. The canvass records all of these votes.
These provisional ballots and mail in ballots are especially crucial in tight elections as was the school board race last year between Tracey Johnson and Julie Wilson. This race had to be decided by drawing of straws.
Another recent mayor’s race in Green River was decided by the flip of a coin. Two candidates Jeff Newland and Travis Bacon were tied with two votes each and a coin flip determined Bacon the winner. This was an election with the city council members of Green River to fill a mid-term resignation by Mayor Pat Brady who moved from the area.
For the senate race; Mitt Romney 1,076 and Mike Kennedy 700 votes.
John Curtis for House of Representatives-1,423 and Christopher Herrod-284
State House of Representatives Christine Watkins-92 and Jae Potter 18.
County Clerk/Auditor Russell Larsen-676 and Brenda Tuttle 1,089
County Sheriff Greg Funk- 1,141 and Keaton Cowley-645.
Local school board district number four; Nicky Nelson-165 Marie Guymon Johnson-179 and Mike Justice 126; the top two in the school board race move on to the November election.
Candidates that did not have a primary are John Barnett for Sheriff; David Blackwell-non-affiliated and Mike Olsen-Republican for County attorney.
These candidates will run in the November election. Tuttle will not have an opponent in November. Sheriff Funk-Republican will run against John Barnett-unafilliated candidate.
