Plans for the Emery County Fair 2005 are well underway. Fair Days are Aug. 3-6. The fair will be under the direction of the recreation district board this year. The chosen theme for 2005 is “New Ideas, New Dreams, New Beginnings.” The fair will feature some long time favorites such as the pet show, baby Olympics, kids day activities, senior activities, booths and exhibits.
New this year will be a pig pickin. Just what is a pig pickin, you might ask. This is a free dinner for county residents which will be held at the Castle Dale City park on Aug. 3. In conjunction with the free dinner, county residents are invited to a giant garage-yard sale which will be held at the same time. You can bring your treasures and set-up in the street as the street will be blocked off for the event. Bring your own tables to set-up your spot. Fair organizers say this promises to be a lot of fun with an opportunity to get rid of and bring home some items. Remember one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. On Thursday, Aug. 4 will be the activities and entertainment for all ages including teenagers. A special youth committee has been organized to plan the day’s activities. Also on Aug. 4, the farm bureau talent find will be held.
The fair committee is trying to bring a fishing pond to add to activities on Aug. 5. A lunch for senior citizens and entertainment is lined up for Aug. 5. A scrapbooking workshop is also being planned and an edition of the ambush makeover awaits a lucky Emery County female. Just so the men won’t feel left behind, a mini-sportsmen expo will cater to those interested in outdoor gear and accessories. The fair committee has plans for an elk calling contest. The National Guard climbing wall will be available free to the public for scaling on Aug. 4-5 of the fair.
The fair parade will take place on Aug. 6. To top off this last day of the fair a free concert will be held at the fairgrounds. J. Marc Bailey and Brandie Frampton will warm the crowd up for the main event, Nashville recording band, Highway 101 in concert. This family oriented event will be free and families are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs and enjoy the outdoor concert. Highway 101 is a country band sure to please the Emery County crowd. Committee members said, “We want everyone from 0-100 to come and share this concert with us. Don’t leave anyone home. It will be a family event where you can just bring the kids and grandparents and let them enjoy. Just come and get comfortable and relax and be entertained.”
The fair committee wants everyone to start thinking about booths, vendors and exhibits. There will be 24-7 on site security to ensure the safety of the items on display and for sale.
The fair board is also on the search for county senior citizens past the age of 90 to be recognized at the fair. Seniors will have a small biography, with a picture, about them printed in the annual fair guide and a float will be prepared so they can ride in the parade. Activities surrounding the fair will include the Castle Valley Pageant and lamb fry on July 28, 29, 30, Aug. 2-6. The Desertview Pro Rodeo on July 28, 29, and 30. The San Rafael Folk Art Festival at the Museum of the San Rafael on July 28-30 and Aug. 2-6.
