Nielson Construction took part in the local session. James Davis from the human resources and safety department represented the company. Davis said that Nielson Construction started in 1967 when John C. Nielson formed the company. The company started really small and there was some doubt as to whether the business would make it, but John’s philosophy was to get a job done for the customer and do whatever the customer needs to keep him happy.
Wayne and Ralph Nielson, current operators of the company are John’s sons and grew up in the business. The business has grown slowly through the years and the quality of work remains the same. John started with a diverse group of employees who knew a bit of everything and they have been very loyal to the company and the company has been loyal to them. The 1990s saw unprecedented growth in the company. In 1998, John died of cancer and Wayne and Ralph took over. In 1999 they took a gamble and purchased an asphalt plant so they could produce SuperPave for the Utah Department of Transportation jobs. They were told you needed at least three years of experience before you get the right blends for SuperPave, but the first year they had things going and with faith and hard work they turned out the product.
They built a satellite shop in Carbon County because they do a lot of work in Carbon County. Nielson Construction did the reclamation work at Plateau and Willow Creek mines. The shop in Carbon County makes it easier to get jobs over there done. Last year, they took another gamble and acquired a second asphalt plant to provide regular asphalt. Nielson’s has a contract with UDOT to provide the SuperPave they need within a 100 mile radius. This year Nielson’s began a coal haul. Nielson Construction recently received the bids on the South Moore Cut-off road project from I-70 back west four miles and also the bid for the interchange project at the Hunter power plant and they will begin work on these jobs this winter.
“Wayne treats all of the employees like family, and like families we don’t always get along. Wayne believes the road to success is always under construction. We believe that and with these partnerships we can move mountains both figuratively and literally,” said Davis.
