On Nov. 5, the culmination of several years work came to the point of grand opening. The Emery County Gun Club opened near the sheriff’s range at the county landfill site on Des-Bee-Dove Road in Castle Dale.
Jason and Jeremy Jewkes, along with Eric Luke and many others shot trap, and had always wanted a regular range at which to hold competitions and practices. The men approached Commissioner Drew Sitterud about help from the county and were pointed in the direction of the Emery County Recreation District.
Shannon Hiatt and the recreation board agreed to take on the project. The board worked up the grant application and approached the permanent community impact board about funding for the gun range. The PCIB approved the application and funding was secured. Emery County donated the land near the landfill, and the equipment to do the site preparation work. The grant money was used to purchase the automatic clay pigeon throwers and the materials to build the bunkers in which they are located.
Volunteers completed the remodeling work to the building which houses the office at the gun range. Shoots and practice rounds are very reasonably priced, and competitions are scheduled to be held every other Saturday at the range. Shoots will begin at 1 p.m., but shooters are welcome to come anytime, as someone will be at the club all day on competition days. The next shoots will be held Dec. 3, 17, and 31.
