The newly formed Green River Archives is now open. It is located in the lower level of the John Wesley Powell River History Museum, 885 East Main, Green River.
The archives is supported by the city of Green River and is a branch of the Emery County Archives. The phone number is 435-564-3427, the e-mailaddress is gra@etv.net. The hours are Tues., Wed., & Thurs. from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday and Friday are field days. If the hours are not convenient, call and arrangements can be made.
Jo Anne Chandler is the archivist caring for all the old and some new materials now stored there. She has extensive experience in research and is an avid history enthusiast. Any subject related to the past and present of Green River, Jo Anne is ready to collect, preserve, photograph and copy.
The Reading Room of the Archives houses models of the Athena and Pershing missiles from the Green River Missile base. They soon hope to have more in the way of pictures and articles on display. This area also houses the extensive collection of geological material presented to the museum as a gift from Dan Welsh.
At present on the temporary wall to the Reading Room there are copies of the 1909 Deseret Evening newspaper about Green River and the land boom. It is quite interesting, it also has a few pictures of Green River. In addition to the paper, is the letter sent to the Air Force in the late 50s by Mayor Howard Silliman presenting Green River as a location for the missile base. This display will be changing on the first and 15th of each month. Who knows what event, family, business or club will be next.
